How original Switch games work on Switch 2
Nintendo supports many original Switch games on Switch 2, but says hardware differences can cause individual games to be unsupported or to have partial functionality issues. Nintendo does not publish an overall compatibility percentage. Its detailed list distinguishes games that are unusable from those with issues or controller caveats.

Which games and features have exceptions?
Games listed as unusable
Nintendo lists Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit as unusable because Switch 2 does not fit into the Toy-Con VR Goggles. The same dated compatibility page lists the Niconico, ABEMA, Hulu, Crunchyroll, and InkyPen apps as unusable on Switch 2. Confirm current status with Nintendo, since the page’s detailed status is dated June 5, 2025.

Games that need original Joy-Con for certain features
Joy-Con 2 lacks some features or physical fit needed by particular original Switch games and accessories. Nintendo says original Joy-Con can connect wirelessly for the listed games below; that does not mean an original controller resolves every compatibility issue.

How to play games you already own
Physical game cards
Insert a compatible original Switch game card into Switch 2. Follow Nintendo’s instructions for inserting and removing game cards. A card’s physical format does not guarantee that the game is compatible, so check its status first. Nintendo also explains how older-console games can be used on Switch 2.

Link the Nintendo Account used to buy a digital game to Switch 2 to access eligible purchases. Nintendo’s separate System Transfer process can move digital games, certain save data, and settings; digital games are redownloaded after the transfer. A game download is not the same thing as transferring its save, and Nintendo’s guidance does not establish that every title or save-transfer method works identically. Virtual game cards
Nintendo’s virtual game cards represent digital games and downloadable content. A loaded card can be played offline on its console, and other users on that console may play it. Nintendo allows an account to load virtual game cards on up to two Switch 2 or Switch consoles in any combination; compatible cards can also be lent within a Nintendo Account family group. These are separate options. Some original Switch games receive free updates, which may improve performance or add support for features such as GameShare. Select games also offer a paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack. What an upgrade adds varies by title and may include visual improvements, features, or modes. Nintendo describes a Switch 2 Edition as the original game bundled with its upgrade pack; the enhanced features and content are for Switch 2, while the original game remains playable on original Switch.

If you own the original game, physical or digital, Nintendo says you can obtain its relevant upgrade pack through Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store, or participating retailers. Certain packs are available at no additional cost to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members.
