What works without a Nintendo Switch Online membership?
Local play
Local play does not require Nintendo Switch Online. It lets you play on the same console or connect with nearby players, depending on the local mode you choose. Nintendo’s official game page describes the game, while its Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ explains the membership requirement for online play.

Play Globally trial
If you select Play Globally without an active membership, Nintendo Support says you can take part in a trial competition against computer competitors. That is a limited alternative, not full online matchmaking with other players.

Is LAN play the same as online play?
No. Nintendo documents LAN play as a way to connect multiple consoles through a shared wired router, distinct from internet matchmaking. Its LAN play instructions explain the setup and equipment for each system, but do not explicitly state whether a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required. Check Nintendo’s current instructions for your setup rather than assuming LAN is membership-free.

A Leg Strap is required for some Soccer gameplay, according to Nintendo’s official game page. It is an accessory requirement for that gameplay, not a substitute for Nintendo Switch Online when you want to play online.
