Yes. Valve’s September 14, 2026 update adds support for playing Half-Life: Alyx standalone on Steam Frame, so a separate PC is not required for that mode. This support applies to Steam Frame specifically; it is distinct from streaming the game from a PC.

How Alyx works on Steam Frame

In standalone mode, the game runs on Steam Frame itself rather than on a separate computer. Valve described its September 14, 2026 update as one that “adds support for Steam Frame standalone gameplay.” Read Valve’s update history.

Valve’s hardware page describes Steam Frame as a SteamOS device with standalone capability. It lists a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor using ARM64 architecture and 16GB of unified LPDDR5X memory. See Steam Frame’s specifications.

Standalone play versus PC streaming

Steam Frame also supports streaming a Steam library from a PC. In that mode, the PC runs the game and sends it to the headset; a PC is therefore still needed. Valve describes an included wireless adapter as part of this PC-streaming setup.

Mode Where Alyx runs Does it need a separate PC?
Standalone On Steam Frame No, for the updated Alyx standalone mode.
PC streaming On the PC, then streamed to Steam Frame Yes. The PC is the source device.

The wireless adapter is described in Valve’s PC-streaming context; Valve’s standalone-support update does not say an adapter or PC is required to run Alyx locally.

What the update changes—and what it does not establish

Valve lists substantial rendering and performance optimizations, foveated rendering support, an ARM64/aarch64 port, and depth reprojection intended to smooth play at lower frame rates. These are implementation details, not a published performance test: Valve’s cited update provides no Alyx-specific frame-rate, latency, image-quality, or battery-life measurements.

Why the Steam page still shows PC requirements

Half-Life: Alyx remains a VR-only game. Its Steam listing labels it “VR Only” and displays Windows PC minimum requirements: Windows 10, an Intel Core i5-7500 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600, 12GB RAM, and a GTX 1060 or RX 580 with 6GB VRAM. Those are the listing’s requirements for PC play; they are not Steam Frame hardware requirements and do not negate the later standalone update.

Does this mean every Steam game works without a PC?

No. Valve describes standalone support as applying to a growing number of games, not the entire Steam library. Its Steam Frame Standalone Verified program is the way to identify which other library games are marked as working standalone. Alyx’s support is specifically established by the September 14, 2026 update, and it should not be generalized to other standalone VR headsets.
