Google’s current requirements say games must not be launchable or usable while driving, and game audio must stop when driving begins. A game’s availability also depends on the particular phone, vehicle, market, and supported setup.
What happens when the car starts moving?
Google classifies games as parked apps. Its Android for Cars announcement says they are not permitted to run while the vehicle is in motion, and that game audio must stop when driving starts and cannot be unpaused while the vehicle is moving. Google’s car app quality criteria likewise require games, video apps, and browsers not to be launchable or usable while driving or play audio in that state.

These rules describe the intended platform behavior, not a guarantee about every malfunctioning setup or modified installation. They do not create an exception for audio-only game use: the audio restriction applies too.
Why does Android Auto lock out games?
The restriction is part of a broader effort to limit distracting interactions behind the wheel. Android Auto help gives typing messages while moving and scrolling through large lists as examples of interactions that can be restricted. Google’s interaction principles warn that visual content can divert attention from the road and say systems should not allow unnecessary hazardous activities such as playing most games while driving.

NHTSA defines distracted driving as activity that diverts attention from driving, including interaction with entertainment or navigation systems. The agency reported 3,208 people killed in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers in 2024; that national figure covers distracted driving broadly and is not specific to Android Auto or gaming.
Does the September 2026 games announcement change the rule?
No. On 21 September 2026, Google announced that games for Android Auto and cars with Android Automotive OS were moving from beta to general availability for developers. That is a milestone for app availability, not permission to play while driving. Google’s announcement states: “Certain types of apps, like games, are considered parked apps and aren’t permitted to run while the vehicle is in motion to avoid driver distraction.”

- Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
- Requires Android 11+
- Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
- Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips
- Plug & play setup, no tech skills needed
Android Auto and Android Automotive OS are related but distinct car platforms. A supported developer category does not mean every game is available on every vehicle or phone; availability depends on the market and the specific supported configuration.
Can a game controller make it safe or allowed?
No. A controller does not override the parked-only restriction or make gaming while driving safe. Google discusses gamepad input as a capability developers can support, but it does not guarantee that every game works with a controller. Before buying an accessory, check the specific game listing and confirm compatibility with the game, phone, and vehicle. Use it only while parked.

What do traffic laws say?
The legal answer depends on where you are. NHTSA says many US states restrict texting, cell-phone use, and other distractions, but that does not establish one rule or penalty for every state, country, or type of in-car game use. Check current official guidance for your jurisdiction. Google’s platform restrictions are not a substitute for applicable traffic law.
