Yes, if the disc qualifies and you successfully claim its digital license. After that, you can launch the game without inserting the disc—but Microsoft conditions the license on your continued possession of the qualifying disc. A normal disc installation does not do this: ordinarily, the disc must remain in the drive to play.
What “converting a disc to digital” means on Xbox
Microsoft’s disc-to-digital feature is a separate license claim, not simply the result of installing a game. For an eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc, sign in on a supported console with an optical drive, insert the disc, and launch the game. If the title qualifies, the console prompts you to accept a digital license. Microsoft describes this as a limited-access license tied to the qualifying disc. Do you need to keep the disc?
Yes. Microsoft says the digital license remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc. It cannot be transferred separately from that disc; Microsoft may require eligibility to be revalidated, and access may be suspended or revoked if you no longer have the disc. So do not assume that claiming the license lets you sell, give away, or discard the disc while keeping assured access to the game. Microsoft’s usage rules set out these conditions.

How to claim the license
- Sign in to your Xbox account on an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console with a disc drive.
- Insert the supported game disc and launch the game.
- If the title is eligible, follow the on-screen prompt to accept the digital license.
- After a successful claim, find and launch the game from your Xbox library on supported devices. Play Anywhere or Cloud Gaming benefits apply only to titles that support those features, as described by Xbox Wire.
Which discs and consoles qualify?
Eligibility is not universal. Microsoft says supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs may qualify, but technical, licensing, publishing, or other factors can affect eligibility, and availability may change. The console’s prompt is the practical check for an individual disc.

The claim requires a disc drive. Xbox Series S is digital-only, and Xbox Series X is sold in both disc-drive and digital-only variants. Check before buying, transferring, or getting rid of a disc
- Do not assume a particular title is eligible just because it is an Xbox One or Series X disc; check by inserting it into a supported console and looking for the claim prompt.
- Do not treat the license as ownership independent of the disc. Retain the qualifying disc if you want to preserve the basis for access.
- If you have only a digital-only Xbox, you cannot make the claim directly because the console cannot read the disc.
- For a backward-compatible Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc, follow the ordinary disc-play requirement rather than assuming the newer claim applies.
The announcement of the feature described “thousands” of supported titles, but that launch wording is not a verified current catalogue count. Eligibility can change; check the title on-console and consult Microsoft’s current usage rules before relying on a license.
