JBL says its Cove speakers can be used as a stereo pair and grouped into a larger whole-home system. The documented setup uses Wi-Fi and the JBL One app: put the speakers on the same home network, choose Create a System from a speaker’s product controls, select the intended system option, and follow the prompts. JBL also requires every speaker microphone to be turned on while the system is created.
The Cove models named in JBL’s setup guidance are the M1, P1, and X1. There is one important qualification: JBL’s general system language does not spell out every possible mixed-model stereo combination. For the clearest model-specific stereo recommendation, JBL’s P1 product page says to add a second Cove P1. Treat mixed-model pairing as an option to verify in the app rather than assuming that every combination offers every stereo mode.

What JBL Cove pairing supports
JBL presents Cove as a whole-home audio range rather than as isolated Bluetooth speakers. Its whole-home audio overview describes stereo, surround and multi-room listening, while JBL’s support procedure explains how to create a system in the JBL One app.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Two-channel stereo: two speakers work together as the left and right sides of one listening setup.
- Multi-room playback: speakers in different rooms are grouped into one system for coordinated listening throughout the home.
- Home theater: compatible Cove speakers are used with a JBL Bar MK2-series soundbar for a more immersive television setup.
These uses are related but not interchangeable. Creating a system in the app is the general mechanism; the option you select determines the kind of system the app attempts to build.
Which Cove models are covered?
JBL’s support material names three Cove products for system creation: Cove M1, Cove P1 and Cove X1. That establishes that all three belong to the supported Cove system family. It does not, by itself, publish a complete compatibility chart for every two-model combination or guarantee that every model can be assigned to every stereo role.
| Use case | What JBL explicitly establishes | What remains model-dependent |
|---|---|---|
| Two-speaker stereo | Cove is marketed for stereo use; JBL specifically recommends adding a second Cove P1 for stereo sound. | JBL does not list every cross-model stereo pairing in the cited support instructions. |
| Multi-room system | M1, P1 and X1 are listed as applicable products for creating a system in the JBL One app. | The exact grouping choices shown for a particular combination are determined in the app. |
| Soundbar home theater | Two Cove M1 or two Cove P1 speakers can pair with JBL Bar MK2-series soundbars. | The cited material does not establish the same soundbar configuration for Cove X1. |
For a same-model stereo purchase, two Cove P1 units are the most directly documented example. If you already own different Cove models, use the app’s available system options and do not assume that a successful multi-room group automatically means a conventional left-right stereo pair.
What you need before starting
Prepare the network and speakers before opening the pairing controls. JBL’s support instructions require the products to be connected to the same home network. This is a Wi-Fi system-creation process in the JBL One app, not merely a procedure for connecting two speakers independently over Bluetooth.

- All Cove speakers on one home network: connect every speaker you want in the system to the same network first.
- The JBL One app: the documented controls are in the app’s speaker product-control screen.
- Microphones enabled during setup: JBL says all speaker microphones must be turned on for successful system creation.
- A clear goal: decide whether you want stereo in one room, coordinated playback across rooms, or soundbar-based home theater.
The microphone requirement matters even if you intend to use the speakers only for music. If one speaker’s microphone is disabled, system creation may not complete according to JBL’s support guidance.
How to create a Cove system in the JBL One app
JBL’s support page, titled “How do you create stereo pair/home theater group?”, gives the following path. The labels below follow that procedure; the exact wording or screen layout can vary with the app version.
- Connect the speakers to the same home network. Do this for every Cove product that will belong to the system.
- Turn on the microphones on all speakers. JBL identifies this as a requirement for successful system creation.
- Open the JBL One app and select the speaker you want to use as the starting point.
- Enter that speaker’s product control. This is the control screen for the selected speaker, not the phone’s general Bluetooth settings.
- Tap “Create a System.”
- Select the desired system option. Choose the option that matches your objective, such as a stereo pair or a home-theater group when the app presents it.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to add the remaining speaker or speakers and finish the group.
If the app does not offer the mode you expected, stop before forcing a different configuration. The available choice may reflect the models in the group; JBL’s public instructions do not promise that every mixed-model set supports every system type.
For stereo in one room: choose the combination carefully
Two Cove P1 speakers
JBL’s Cove P1 product page gives the clearest stereo example: add a second Cove P1 for rich stereo sound. If your priority is a conventional two-speaker music setup and you are choosing hardware specifically for that purpose, two matching P1 units align with that explicit recommendation. See the Cove P1 product page for JBL’s wording and related product information.

Two Cove M1 speakers
Cove M1 is one of the models JBL lists for system creation, and JBL markets the Cove family for stereo listening. The cited support material does not provide a separate M1-specific sentence equivalent to the P1 recommendation, so confirm the stereo option shown by the JBL One app for your two M1 speakers.
Two Cove X1 speakers
Cove X1 is also named in JBL’s system-creation guidance. That supports including X1 in a Cove system, but the available instructions do not define every X1 stereo configuration. Use the app’s system selector to see which mode JBL enables for the speakers you have.
Mixed models
A mixed M1/P1, M1/X1 or P1/X1 group may be recognized as a system, but JBL’s cited pages do not publish a complete matrix of mixed-model stereo support. “Can be grouped” and “can operate as a left-right stereo pair” are therefore not identical claims. If the app offers a stereo-pair option for your specific combination, follow that option; if it offers only a general system or multi-room grouping, do not describe the result as a confirmed stereo pair.
For synchronized multi-room playback
Multi-room playback is the broader use case. Instead of treating two speakers as the left and right channels in one room, you create a system that contains speakers located in different parts of the home. JBL’s whole-home audio positioning covers this style of listening, and its support workflow uses the same network-and-app process.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Use the same sequence:
- Connect every intended Cove speaker to the same home network.
- Make sure all speaker microphones are enabled during system creation.
- In JBL One, open one speaker’s product control and tap Create a System.
- Select the multi-room or other system option presented for your products.
- Follow the prompts to add the remaining speakers.
The important distinction is that a multi-room group does not necessarily turn two physically separate speakers into a left and right stereo pair. Choose the system type that matches how you want the speakers to behave, and check the app’s description before completing the group.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using Cove speakers with a JBL Bar MK2 soundbar
JBL documents a related home-theater arrangement: two Cove M1 or two Cove P1 speakers can pair with JBL Bar MK2-series soundbars for immersive home-theater sound. This is a separate use case from a music-only stereo pair and from a general multi-room group.
The model boundary is important. The cited JBL pages do not establish that Cove X1 supports this particular Bar MK2 configuration. If your planned system includes X1, look for an explicit option in the JBL One app rather than extending the M1/P1 soundbar statement to X1.

Troubleshooting a failed or incomplete setup
The app cannot find one of the speakers
- Check that the missing speaker is connected to the same home network as the speaker from which you started system creation.
- Confirm that you are working in the JBL One app’s product-control screen, then reopen Create a System.
- Check the microphone setting on every speaker. JBL requires all microphones to be on during system creation.
The stereo option is not displayed
Do not assume that a multi-room system and a stereo pair are the same thing. Verify the models in the group and read the option presented by the app. For a clearly documented stereo example, use two Cove P1 speakers; JBL specifically describes adding a second P1 for stereo.
A soundbar group is unclear
Limit the documented soundbar combination to two Cove M1 or two Cove P1 speakers with a JBL Bar MK2-series soundbar. The cited information does not confirm the same arrangement for X1, so an X1-based plan needs an explicit in-app option or additional JBL documentation.
System creation stops partway through
Return to the three conditions JBL identifies: same home network, JBL One app, and microphones enabled on all speakers. Recheck those conditions before trying the system-creation path again. If the app still presents no compatible option, the requested combination may not support that mode even though the individual speakers are part of the Cove system family.

A quick decision guide
| Your objective | Best-supported starting point | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Left-right stereo for music | Two Cove P1 speakers | JBL explicitly recommends adding a second P1; use the JBL One app to create the stereo system. |
| Whole-home listening | Any combination of the listed M1, P1 and X1 products that the app accepts | All products must share the same home network, and all microphones must be on during creation. |
| TV or movie surround-style setup | Two Cove M1 or two Cove P1 speakers with a JBL Bar MK2-series soundbar | Do not assume the cited soundbar compatibility applies to X1. |
| Mixed-model stereo | Check the exact option offered by JBL One | JBL’s cited pages do not provide a complete cross-model stereo matrix. |
What JBL’s 2026 launch information adds
JBL’s launch announcement, dated September 1, 2026, positions Cove as a whole-home audio system intended to combine JBL sound with flexible, home-wide playback. The announcement quotes Carsten Olesen, President, Consumer Audio at HARMAN, describing Cove as a step toward making sound throughout the home simpler and more accessible. That announcement is useful context for why stereo and multi-room grouping are presented together, but the JBL support page remains the practical authority for the setup sequence and microphone requirement. You can read the announcement at JBL’s Cove launch release.
Bottom line for your pairing plan
Two JBL Cove speakers can be used for stereo, and Cove speakers can be organized into a larger multi-speaker system. Start with the JBL One app, put every speaker on the same home network, enable all microphones, and choose Create a System. If you want the most explicit stereo match in JBL’s product information, choose two Cove P1 speakers. M1, P1 and X1 are all listed for Cove system creation, but mixed-model stereo behavior is not fully documented. For home theater, JBL specifically names two M1 or two P1 speakers with a Bar MK2-series soundbar; do not extend that claim to X1 without confirmation.
