Yes—WinRAR can open and extract an .exe file when it is a self-extracting archive (SFX). But an .exe is an executable file type, not proof that the file is an archive. Use WinRAR’s archive commands to inspect or extract an SFX; launching the file runs its code.
When can WinRAR open an EXE?
WinRAR can unpack a self-extracting archive saved with an .exe extension. An archive is a container for files; an SFX combines archived data with an executable component so it can extract its contents when run. It may also be possible to open that file with WinRAR and extract its contents without launching it. RARLAB explains that SFX archives can be unpacked with WinRAR.

That capability does not mean WinRAR can browse every program or installer that ends in .exe. A conventional executable may not be an archive at all. RARLAB’s guidance concerns self-extracting archives, not all executable files.

No. Opening or extracting a file through WinRAR’s archive workflow is different from running the EXE. RARLAB’s advice is to unpack a self-extracting archive with WinRAR without running it. By contrast, launching the EXE starts its executable code. Some SFX files can be configured to run an executable stored inside the archive, which is another reason to distinguish extracting from launching. How to extract an SFX without launching it

Open WinRAR from its application shortcut or Start menu. Do not double-click the unfamiliar EXE in File Explorer; that may launch it.

In WinRAR, use its file-browsing controls to navigate to the EXE. If WinRAR recognizes it as an archive, browse its contents or choose the extraction command.

Choose an extraction destination and review the files before opening or running any of them. Extracting files is not a guarantee that they are harmless.

If WinRAR does not recognize the file as an archive, do not assume it is a corrupt SFX or try to launch it just to find out. It may simply be an ordinary executable rather than an archive WinRAR can browse.

Is it safe to open an EXE with WinRAR?
RARLAB warns that executable files can run code and advises running them only when they come from a trustworthy source. Extracting an SFX with WinRAR is distinct from running it, but the file remains executable if launched. Be cautious with both the EXE and any extracted files; extraction alone does not establish that their contents are safe.
In an October 1, 2015 statement, WinRAR developer Eugene Roshal wrote that users can unpack self-extracting EXE archives with WinRAR “and do not run them.” That advice is specifically about unpacking an archive without executing its SFX program.

RARLAB’s homepage listed WinRAR 7.23 as a release and WinRAR 7.30 beta 1 as available when checked on October 7, 2026; the page was last updated September 10, 2026. The beta is not the same as a release. Check RARLAB’s homepage for the current listings, since versions can change.
