Can You Make Biochar From Used Coffee Grounds for Water Filtration?

Used coffee grounds can become pollutant-adsorbing biochar in controlled research, but the evidence does not validate a homemade filter for drinking water.

Used coffee grounds can be converted into biochar that adsorbs certain pollutants in laboratory tests, but published evidence does not establish a safe homemade drinking-water filter. Researchers make the material in controlled, oxygen-limited furnaces and test it against specific contaminants; those procedures and results are not a household recipe or proof that filtered water is potable.

What making coffee-ground biochar involves

Research papers refer to used grounds as spent coffee grounds (SCG). To turn them into biochar, researchers first dry the grounds and then heat them while limiting oxygen. The temperature, time, atmosphere and any activation treatment vary with the material and contaminant being studied. An open fire or improvised kitchen heating process does not reproduce a nitrogen-purged laboratory furnace.

For example, a 2024 phosphate study dried wet grounds at 50 °C for 48 hours and pyrolyzed them in a nitrogen-purged vertical furnace at temperatures from 300 to 550 °C, holding each test temperature for one hour. The researchers then washed the material with dichloromethane to address polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), followed by distilled water. That solvent-based laboratory procedure is not an instruction for home preparation. Torboli et al., Cleaner Engineering and Technology (2024).

A University of Washington thesis used a different approach: it dried grounds at 90 °C for 42 hours, sieved them, and made unactivated biochar in a sealed tube furnace purged with nitrogen. The furnace was held at 200 °C for an hour, then raised to 400 °C for four hours. Its separate KOH-activated material involved a 1:1 potassium hydroxide-to-biochar ratio, heating to 800 °C for 30 minutes, and repeated dilute hydrochloric-acid washing until pH 7. These procedures require specialized equipment, inert gas and hazardous chemicals; they should not be improvised at home. University of Washington thesis repository record.

  • FOR ALL FILTERS: Ideal for use in all aquarium filters.
  • MARINELAND FILTRATION PRODUCTS: Count on Marineland brand for the most reliable, technically advanced aquariums and accessories on the market.

These differing methods do not identify one universally best temperature. Feedstock, target pollutant, activation and test conditions all matter. In the phosphate paper, the favorable result at 450 °C was for iron-coated biochar under that study’s test conditions, not a general recommendation for every water-filter use.

What the studies show about pollutant removal

Biochar adsorption means that a substance attaches to the material under specified conditions. It does not by itself demonstrate that a complete filter makes water safe. The following results come from distinct laboratory studies and cannot be compared as if they used the same water, pH, setup or treatment conditions.

Target Material and reported result What the result means
Phosphate The 2024 Cleaner Engineering and Technology study reported a maximum adsorption capacity of 0.87 mg P/g for biochar made at 450 °C and iron-coated at an Fe-to-biochar mass ratio of 2:1, with an initial phosphate concentration of 15 mg P/L. Unactivated biochar removed 5.7%; iron-activated material reached up to 17.3% removal. These are experimental results for phosphate in that test solution, not predicted household performance. Study.
Lead, manganese and cadmium A 2020 Materials study reported maximum adsorption values for biochar of 22.3 mg/g for lead, 19.6 mg/g for manganese and 19.4 mg/g for cadmium. Corresponding values for raw spent grounds were 13.6, 13.0 and 11.0 mg/g. The measurements used prepared aqueous solutions and the study’s reactor and sorption conditions; they do not establish performance in a household filter. Study.
Selected organic compounds A 2025 ACS Omega study reported up to 100% removal of selected compounds in aqueous laboratory tests using magnesium-carbonate-activated coffee-derived material. Results depended on pH and test setup. They do not establish field performance or drinking-water safety. Study.
Mixed compounds and natural organic matter A University of Washington thesis found different behavior for unactivated and KOH-activated samples and reported that mixtures and natural organic matter could affect outcomes. Other material in the water can influence adsorption, so a result for one test contaminant may not hold in a different water matrix. Thesis repository record.

The 2024 study authors describe the potential to use the material as a pollutant sorbent and recover iron-phosphate-enriched biochar: “The results demonstrate the positive outcomes of upcycling SCG waste material as a pollutant sorbent and the potential to diminish reliance on chemical fertilizers through the recovery of Fe-phosphate-enriched SCG biochar.” This is the authors’ interpretation of their tested application, not evidence that the material is a certified drinking-water treatment.

Why the results do not establish a safe drinking-water filter

A pollutant attaching to biochar in a batch experiment answers a limited question about that contaminant and that test setup. It does not show that a packed, flowing filter will keep removing it over repeated use, that other contaminants will be removed, or that microbes will be controlled. The cited studies do not establish a complete treatment train, dependable microbial removal, safety across source waters or potability.

  • Removal is contaminant-specific: evidence for phosphate, selected metals or certain organic compounds cannot be generalized to every pollutant in a water source.
  • Water chemistry matters: pH, mixtures and natural organic matter can change how adsorption performs.
  • A test result is not certification: the reported studies are laboratory investigations, not validation of a home-built drinking-water system.
  • Appearance is not a safety test: visual clarity or pH alone does not show that water is safe to drink.

Do not drink water on the assumption that a homemade coffee-ground biochar filter has made it safe. A real treatment application needs testing for the specific contaminant and validation of the treatment under the conditions in which it will be used. The evidence here does not identify a certified home-filter design.

How to interpret claims about a “best” method

There is no single temperature or activation method established here as best for water filtration in general. A meaningful comparison would need to account for the target contaminant, whether the material is unactivated or modified, the pyrolysis atmosphere and temperature, activation chemistry, water pH and matrix, competing substances, and whether results came from a batch test or a flowing filter column. The studies above use different targets and conditions, so their removal figures are not head-to-head performance rankings.

For the same reason, copying a temperature from one paper is not enough to recreate its outcome. In the phosphate study, the highest reported capacity applied to iron-coated material at a specified iron ratio and initial phosphate concentration. The Washington thesis’s KOH activation used caustic chemical treatment and acid washing; it represents a separate laboratory method, not a casual improvement step.
