You can customize some Alexa responses, but Amazon’s published guidance does not promise that Alexa will speak profanity. Its Skill Blueprints rules explicitly prohibit profanity and vulgar content, while its routine instructions explain how to add custom actions without confirming that explicit wording will work.
What you can customize—and what Amazon documents
Amazon offers two relevant ways to shape Alexa’s responses: a Custom Q&A skill made with Skill Blueprints, and a Routine with a custom action. They work differently: Custom Q&A responds to a question you define, while a Routine runs after its configured trigger. Neither route is documented as a guaranteed way to make Alexa say a swear word.

| Option | How you invoke it | Documented boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Custom Q&A Blueprint | Ask a question that matches one you set up. | Amazon’s Blueprint content rules prohibit profanity and explicit sexual or vulgar content. Amazon’s guidelines set that boundary. |
| Alexa Routine | Use the voice command or trigger configured for the Routine. | Amazon documents adding a custom action, but the cited instructions do not say that explicit responses are supported or will be spoken. |
Set up a Custom Q&A response
Custom Q&A lets you define an answer for a question you expect to ask. Amazon describes the Blueprint as a way to create personalized Alexa skills and responses; it does not override the content rules for those skills.
- Open the Alexa Skill Blueprints help page and choose the Custom Q&A Blueprint.
- Enter a question and the response you want Alexa to give. Amazon’s Custom Q&A instructions explain the Blueprint’s setup.
- Use a response that follows Amazon’s content guidelines, then save and enable the Blueprint as directed in the interface.
- Ask the question in the way you entered it. Amazon cautions that Alexa might not recognize the intended question, so matching the wording matters.
Amazon’s Skill Blueprints Content Guidelines state that Blueprint skills “should not contain” profanity or explicit sexual or vulgar content. A Blueprint is therefore not an approved method for adding swear words to Alexa’s responses.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Use a Routine for a custom voice-triggered action
Routines provide a separate way to configure a response to a voice command. Amazon’s help page, “Set a Custom Action in an Alexa Routine,” documents adding a custom action. Amazon Staff also described using Routines for custom responses to voice commands in a December 21, 2024 forum reply.
- In the Alexa app, open More, then Routines.
- Create a Routine and choose its trigger, such as a voice command, using the options available in your app.
- Add the available custom action and enter a non-explicit test response.
- Save the Routine and try its trigger. The documented steps establish that custom actions can be added; they do not establish that a particular explicit phrase will pass any filters or be spoken on every device or in every locale.
If Alexa does not give the response
First check whether Alexa heard the trigger or question as intended. For Custom Q&A, Amazon specifically warns that Alexa may not understand a question and directs users to Alexa activity or history tools to review what was heard. If recognition is the problem, try asking the question as written and inspect the app’s activity history. If Alexa recognized the words but did not use the response, the official material cited here does not identify a profanity workaround or guarantee a particular outcome.

Practical expectations for shared devices
Test custom responses with ordinary, non-explicit wording before relying on a setup. If other people use the device, consider whether a custom response is appropriate for them too. Treat Blueprint content rules as a firm boundary for Blueprint skills, and do not assume that a Routine offers an exception: Amazon’s cited Routine guidance does not confirm that it permits spoken profanity.
