Not directly in YouTube Studio, according to YouTube’s documented workflows. You can broadcast a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live stream without OBS by using a cloud streaming service that loops uploaded videos. YouTube’s encoder workflow also supports other encoders, but the cited YouTube instructions do not show a native control that turns an uploaded file into a looping live broadcast.
What “without OBS” means here
OBS is one kind of encoder software. YouTube describes three ways to stream: webcam, mobile device, or encoder. Its encoder route can use software or hardware, and YouTube’s encoder information lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming without a dedicated PC. YouTube’s encoder overview does not establish that Studio itself can loop an uploaded video.

YouTube’s webcam workflow lets you go live from a computer without separate encoding software, but it is a camera workflow—not a documented way to play and loop a local video file. YouTube’s webcam instructions do not describe file playback as a webcam feature.

Choose a way to keep prerecorded video live

How to start a prerecorded YouTube Live stream with an encoder
This is the general YouTube encoder flow. The encoder is responsible for sending the video; YouTube receives it and lets you start the public broadcast in Live Control Room.

- Check channel eligibility. Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Prepare a file and an encoder that can loop it. Choose a prerecorded video you have the rights to stream, then confirm that your selected encoder or service supports file playback and looping. YouTube’s general encoder documentation explains the stream connection, not a universal file-loop setting.
- Set up the stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast. Treat the key like a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Configure the encoder. Enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in the encoder, select the prerecorded source, and enable looping if the encoder offers that function. Exact labels differ by encoder; YouTube’s instructions do not specify a common loop toggle or recommended file settings for every encoder.
- Start sending the video, then check the preview. Start the encoder and wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check that both picture and audio are correct before clicking Go live. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring stream quality; see YouTube’s encoder streaming steps and streaming troubleshooting guidance.
- Monitor the broadcast. Confirm the stream remains connected and that audio and video continue as intended. Do not leave a new setup unattended until you have tested the complete file-to-YouTube path.
- End it deliberately. Use Live Control Room to end the broadcast and stop the encoder from sending content. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; plan for that limit if you intend to run a continuous loop. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers ending a stream and its archive behavior.
Copyright, music, and reused content
Being prerecorded does not exempt a live broadcast from copyright rules. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, including music, visuals, and any third-party clips. A video that can be uploaded is not automatically cleared for an uninterrupted live rebroadcast. YouTube’s copyright guidance explains copyright basics; review the rights and any applicable license conditions before running a loop.
Also consider whether the channel’s overall programming offers meaningful original value. Repeating material is not a shortcut around YouTube’s monetization policies: eligibility and monetization decisions depend on the channel and YouTube’s current rules, not simply on whether a stream is live. Check YouTube’s channel monetization policies before building a channel around repeated or minimally changed content.

Common problems and fixes
- No preview appears: Check that the encoder is running, the stream URL and stream key match the stream selected in Live Control Room, and the encoder is sending a supported feed. Re-copy the key if needed, keeping it private.
- The stream reaches YouTube but does not go public: A received preview is not the same as a live broadcast. Check the preview and then select Go live in Live Control Room.
- The file plays once instead of looping: The loop behavior belongs to the encoder or cloud service, not a documented Studio file-loop control. Enable looping in the chosen tool or use one that explicitly supports it.
- Audio is missing or wrong: Play the preview and check the source file and encoder audio selection before going live. Test the full recording, not just the first few seconds.
- Live streaming is unavailable: Verify the channel and check for restrictions. If you have only just enabled live streaming, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.
- A long broadcast ends or is not archived as expected: YouTube’s documented automatic archive condition is for streams under 12 hours. Plan a deliberate stop or restart rather than assuming an unlimited stream will archive in the same way.
