Sometimes. What happens depends on the program: a TestFlight build stops opening when its testing period ends, while an app in a Google Play test remains installed after the test ends, although updates stop. Leaving a Google Play app beta is different from opting out of Android Beta for Pixel, which can affect the entire device.
What happens depends on how the beta ends
“The beta ended” can mean a developer ended a test, a tester left a program, or a particular build expired. Those events have different results. The key distinction is whether you are using an individual app beta or beta software for the Android operating system.
Apple TestFlight: the beta build stops opening
Apple says a TestFlight build can be tested for up to 90 days. When its testing period is over, testers can no longer open that beta build. A developer can also expire a build earlier; an expired build is no longer available for internal or external testers to install. If the app has a public App Store version, download or purchase that version from the App Store. It is a separate version from the TestFlight build, so the public app may remain available even after the beta build becomes unusable. TestFlight in-app purchases are free only during beta testing, and purchases made during testing do not carry over to the App Store version. Apple’s TestFlight terms also describe beta access as a limited license for testing purposes and for a limited time.

Google Play app beta: the installed app stays, but updates stop
When a developer ends a Google Play app test, Google says the app remains installed on testers’ devices, but testers no longer receive updates. The documentation does not guarantee that every app will continue to work: its online services, account access, or other features may depend on the developer. Leaving a Google Play app beta to use the public version
If you leave an app’s beta program and want to use its public version, Google’s instructions are to leave the beta, uninstall the beta app, and reinstall the public version. Google warns that leaving and uninstalling may cause you to lose progress or customizations. Check that your data is backed up or synced, if the app offers that option, before uninstalling. Follow Google Play’s instructions for joining or leaving an app beta.

Android Beta for Pixel is not an app beta
Android Beta for Pixel tests operating-system software, not one app. Google says opting out returns the device to the stable public Android version and wipes user data. Google describes a limited no-wipe opt-out window after installing the stable update that corresponds to the tested version and before installing the next beta update. Because timing and available updates matter, read Google’s current Android Beta for Pixel instructions before opting out, and back up important data.

Before you switch versions
- Identify whether you joined TestFlight, a Google Play beta for one app, or Android Beta for Pixel.
- Check whether the public app or stable system version is available and follow that platform’s switch instructions.
- Read the app developer’s notice for rules about saved data, subscriptions, accounts, and online services; platform guidance cannot establish how a particular app handles them.
- Back up or sync important data before uninstalling an app or opting out of an operating-system beta.
