AI Writing Tutors vs. Grammarly: Which Is Better for Learning to Revise?

For quick grammar, clarity and language-use feedback, Grammarly has the stronger direct evidence; for learning to make independent revision decisions, there is no proven winner. The available 2025 study compared Grammarly Premium with teacher comments—not with a defined AI tutor—and did not test whether students kept improving after the tool was removed. A practical approach is to treat suggestions as choices to evaluate, then ask a human reader about argument, evidence and meaning.

What the evidence actually compares

A 2025 quasi-experimental study followed 60 postgraduate students writing in English as a foreign language. One group used Grammarly Premium under university-provided licenses; the comparison group received traditional written teacher feedback. Participants were instructed to assess Grammarly’s suggestions critically. The study reports significantly higher overall post-test writing proficiency for the Grammarly group, but its results apply to that intervention and setting—not to every learner, genre or writing tool. Most importantly, it was not an AI-tutor-versus-Grammarly test. It also did not establish long-term independent revision skill. Calling it proof that Grammarly teaches students to revise better on their own would go beyond what was measured.

Where Grammarly feedback appears strongest

In the study, Grammarly-assisted students made their strongest gains in Language Use, followed by Organization. The groups did not differ significantly in Content scores. That distinction matters: fewer language errors or clearer organization do not automatically mean stronger ideas, evidence or argument.

Grammarly describes its education tools as offering strategic revision suggestions with explanations, as well as optional generative help for brainstorming and outlining. Those are company descriptions of product features, not independent evidence that students develop transferable revision judgment. Grammarly for Education.

What an AI tutor may add—and what remains uncertain

An interactive tutor can be designed to ask why a writer made a choice, identify alternatives and guide the student through questions about evidence or purpose. That could encourage the learner to reason through a revision instead of merely accepting a replacement. It is a pedagogical inference, however, not a demonstrated advantage in a direct comparison with Grammarly. The result depends on the tutor’s design and the quality of its guidance.

Broader evidence suggests algorithm-based feedback can help writing, but it does not settle which current tool best teaches revision. A 2026 meta-analysis search-result summary reports an average effect of g = 0.36 across 33 experimental and quasi-experimental studies published from 2011 through 2024, with small transfer to new writing tasks. It reports different results for surface- and deep-level outcomes and says effects for Grammarly and Pigai were statistically significant, while ChatGPT feedback effects were not. The article itself was not available in full in the cited record, so these figures should be read as the meta-analysis summary, not as a product ranking. Meta-analysis record.

How to use Grammarly as revision practice

If you have a draft and want to catch surface-level problems, Grammarly can be a useful first pass. To make that pass more educational, do not accept every suggestion automatically. For each change you keep, ask:

  • What was incorrect, unclear or awkward in the original?
  • Why does the suggested change improve it?
  • Would another edit preserve my intended meaning or voice better?

A 2025 study on Grammarly feedback emphasized critical engagement, while a 2024 cross-institutional article discusses the concern that some learners may adopt automated suggestions without processing them. Read the 2024 article. The learning benefit comes from making and evaluating revision decisions, not simply accumulating accepted edits.

When to seek a human reader

For a question about whether an essay’s claim is convincing, its evidence supports the conclusion, or its structure serves the intended audience, ask an instructor, peer or writing-center tutor when possible. Grammarly’s AI Grader can provide document- and paragraph-level feedback against a supplied rubric or basic criteria, according to its support guide, but Grammarly says its predicted grade is not the final grade and that the feature is not a replica of a professor. Its access varies by plan and administrator settings, so check current account documentation. AI Grader user guide.

Also follow the assignment’s rules before using generative features. Grammarly’s guide recommends consulting the instructor; course policies determine what assistance is permitted and whether it must be disclosed.

A useful workflow for learning to revise

  1. Draft for yourself first. Get your ideas down before asking a tool to rewrite or polish them.
  2. Use Grammarly to flag possible issues. Treat each suggestion as a proposal, not an instruction.
  3. Explain the edits you accept. Record what changed and why; reject edits that distort your meaning.
  4. Ask a human about higher-order questions. Get feedback on argument, evidence, audience and purpose.
  5. Review the next draft without leaning on the same corrections. Notice which problems you can now catch yourself. This is a sensible practice for checking your own progress, not a learning outcome established by the cited Grammarly study.

Students who want a structured practice companion might also consider John Warner’s The Writer’s Practice, which its publisher describes as a step-by-step writing process for students and novice writers. It is a book, not a direct substitute for software feedback or tutoring. Publisher’s book page.
