No. Downloading or adding a PlayStation Plus game to your library does not create a permanent, independent license. Monthly games require an active PlayStation Plus membership, while Extra and Premium catalog games require the relevant tier and can leave the service. To keep playing a particular title without Plus, you must purchase that title separately in a compatible digital or physical edition.
What downloading a PlayStation Plus game actually gives you
A download gives your console the game files; it does not change the terms of the entitlement attached to those files. PlayStation’s US PlayStation Plus Usage Terms state: “Games downloaded to your console are playable as long as you have a valid subscription and the game remains available in the service.” Both conditions matter. A valid subscription alone cannot restore a catalog title that has been removed, and keeping the files installed does not preserve access after your membership ends.

PlayStation’s own FAQ uses the shorter formulation “Yes, for as long as you remain an active subscriber” when answering whether PlayStation Plus games are yours to keep. That answer concerns continued subscription access, not permanent ownership in the way a separately purchased game is licensed.
Monthly games and catalog games follow different rules
Monthly games
Each month, eligible members can add the offered games to their library and download them. The entitlement remains tied to an active PlayStation Plus subscription. Sony’s cancellation guidance specifically says previously downloaded monthly games are no longer available after the subscription ends.

Adding a monthly game before the monthly offer changes does not turn it into a perpetual license. If you later renew the same membership, access to an eligible monthly game can return because the subscription condition is satisfied again. The game is still governed by the service’s current terms and platform compatibility.
Game Catalog titles
Game Catalog access is a subscription benefit rather than a purchase. On the US plan structure described by PlayStation, the Extra tier provides the Game Catalog and the Premium tier includes the Game Catalog as well. A title in that catalog can carry an announced date on which it leaves the service. Once that date passes, downloading it earlier does not preserve the right to play it through Plus.
Catalog availability is title-specific. Check the current listing for the exact game instead of assuming that every catalog addition has the same duration or departure policy.

The US PlayStation page identifies the Classics Catalog as a Premium benefit. These games are also conditional access: you need the relevant tier, and the title must remain available in the service. The fact that a classic game is installed on your console does not convert it into a permanent purchase.

What happens when you cancel PlayStation Plus
Turning off renewal and ending a membership are not the same moment. PlayStation’s cancellation guidance says your benefits continue until the end of the subscription period you have already paid for. During that remaining period, eligible monthly and catalog benefits continue under the applicable tier and service rules.
- Cancel renewal or request cancellation. This stops the next automatic charge; it does not normally erase the time remaining on the current term.
- Check the displayed end date. Keep that date in mind for monthly games, catalog access and any add-ons tied to a catalog title.
- Use the benefits before the term expires. Downloading a game during the remaining period does not extend the entitlement beyond the end date.
- After the end date, expect subscription access to stop. Previously downloaded monthly games and other Plus benefits are unavailable while the membership is inactive.
Renewing later can restore access to benefits that are still offered and to games that remain available. It cannot bring back a catalog title that has already left the service, and it cannot substitute for buying a game that you want to access independently.
Catalog departure dates can override your download
A catalog game has two separate limits: your membership must be active at the required tier, and the game must still be in the catalog. PlayStation may announce an end date for an individual title. On that date, the service entitlement ends even if the game remains installed on your console.
Before starting a long game, open its current PlayStation Plus listing and look for an announced removal date. Treat that date as the last service date, not as a promise that an installed copy will continue working offline afterward. Catalog pages and terms can change, so recheck the listing if your plans extend beyond the date shown.

DLC and add-ons may stop working too
Buying downloadable content for a catalog game does not give you an independent right to the base game. Sony’s FAQ explains that add-ons purchased for a catalog title may become unusable when your membership expires or when the base game leaves the service. Access may return if you renew the appropriate membership or purchase the game, provided the add-on and the game are compatible with that purchase.
This creates an important cost decision: an inexpensive add-on can become inaccessible when the subscription entitlement underneath it disappears. If you have invested in expansions, check whether you would be willing to buy the base game before letting the catalog entitlement lapse.
How to keep playing a specific game long term
Buy the digital edition
A separate Store purchase is governed by a different license from a subscription entitlement. PlayStation’s March 2026 terms describe Store digital purchases as a personal license for private, non-commercial use. That purchase is the route to access independent of PlayStation Plus, subject to the edition, platform and account restrictions shown for the title.

Do not assume that a discounted Plus price, a catalog download or a previously installed copy converts automatically into a purchase. Open the game’s Store page and verify that the specific edition you need is available for your console generation and account region.

Use a physical edition when one exists
A boxed copy of the particular game can provide a purchase-based route without relying on the Plus catalog. Physical availability is title-specific: PlayStation’s terms distinguish physical goods from digital Store licenses, but they do not say that every Plus game has a disc release. Confirm that the disc edition exists, matches your console’s disc drive, and is compatible with the version you want before relying on it.
Confirm platform compatibility
A purchase must match the platform on which you intend to play. Check the Store listing or the physical product details for the exact console generation, edition and region. A separately purchased version may not provide every entitlement associated with another version, and a disc cannot be used on a console that has no disc drive.

A practical decision checklist
- Identify the source. Is the game a monthly claim, a Game Catalog title or a Classics Catalog title?
- Check the tier. Confirm which membership level the listing requires in your country.
- Look for an end date. Catalog titles can display a specific departure date.
- Review your membership end date. Cancelling renewal leaves the already-paid period in place, but not beyond it.
- Account for add-ons. DLC for a catalog game may be unusable when the base game is inaccessible.
- Decide whether you need independent access. If you want to play after Plus ends, check the game’s separate digital purchase and any compatible physical edition.
- Verify the platform and region. Confirm the exact console version and local Store listing before paying.
Common situations and the correct outcome
“I added the monthly game but never downloaded it.”
Adding it to your library does not remove the active-membership requirement. You can use it while the membership is active under the monthly-game terms, but not after the subscription ends unless you obtain independent access.

“The game is still installed after my subscription expired.”
The installation is only the local data. The service checks the entitlement, so an installed monthly or catalog game can become unavailable when the membership condition is no longer met.

“I cancelled, but the game still works today.”
That is consistent with PlayStation’s policy: cancellation normally stops renewal while benefits remain active through the paid period. The relevant cutoff is the membership end date, not the day you changed the renewal setting.
“I renewed, but a catalog game is still unavailable.”
Renewal restores the membership condition; it does not restore a title that has left the catalog. Check the current listing to determine whether the game is still offered and whether your tier is eligible.
“My expansion no longer works.”
If the expansion belongs to a catalog game, the base-game entitlement may have expired because the membership ended or the title left the service. Renewing the relevant tier or buying the compatible base game may restore use, subject to the add-on’s own compatibility.
Country, plan and policy differences
The cancellation guidance cited by PlayStation is from its UK support information, while the catalog FAQ and Usage Terms cited here are US pages. Plan names, catalogs, pricing, availability and legal terms can vary by country. Use the support page, terms and catalog listing for the country on your account when making a purchase or deciding whether to cancel.
These rules and catalogs are changeable. A current title page is more reliable than an old screenshot or a past monthly-game list, particularly when you are deciding whether to buy DLC or start a game with a published removal date.
The bottom line
PlayStation Plus downloads are subscription access, not permanent ownership. Monthly games require an active membership; Extra and Premium catalog games also depend on the right tier and on the title remaining in the catalog. Cancelling renewal leaves access intact until the paid term ends, but it does not make downloaded games permanent. For a game you need to keep available independently, buy that specific compatible digital edition or use a physical edition if one exists.
