Search from your location or postcode, choose the fuel grade your vehicle needs, then compare the listed price with the station’s distance and the price listing’s update time. Treat the pump price as the final check: coverage and reporting methods vary, so an app listing is not a guarantee of what you will pay.
Compare the price you can actually use
The lowest number on a map is not automatically the best stop. A useful comparison combines the right fuel grade, a station you can reach conveniently, a current price and any discount you are eligible to use. A cheaper station far off your route may cost more in extra driving than it saves at the pump.

Start by choosing a service that covers your country and local area. Then search from your current location, postcode or suburb, select the correct fuel, and compare nearby results in map or list view. If a service shows when a price was updated or where its data comes from, use that information to judge how much confidence to place in the listing.
Make the comparison on equal terms. Check that the prices refer to the same fuel grade, the same kind of purchase and the same unit, and distinguish the displayed pump price from a discount that may depend on a membership or other condition. A service that shows fewer stations but clearly identifies its source or update time may be more useful to you than a long list with little context; the best fit depends on what is available in your area.

Use this step-by-step search
- Choose a local comparison tool. Use a government service, a local consumer-agency recommendation or a commercial app that covers the area where you plan to buy fuel. A tool that works well in one country may not cover another.
- Set the search area. Allow location access if you want nearby results, or enter a postcode, suburb or other location. If you are planning a trip, search along the route or near a destination rather than only around your current position.
- Select the fuel your vehicle requires. Compare like with like: a low listing for a different grade is not a usable saving. If the tool offers several fuel types or grades, select the one you normally buy.
- Compare both price and journey. Check the displayed price per litre against the station’s distance or route. Consider whether it is already on your journey, whether reaching it adds a detour, and whether the route is practical for your trip.
- Check freshness and discounts. Look for an update time or data-source information when available. Include a loyalty or retailer discount only if you qualify for it and understand how it applies to the displayed price.
- Confirm at the forecourt. Check the price shown at the pump before filling up. If it differs from the listing, rely on the pump price for the purchase and, where a reporting channel exists, report the discrepancy with the station and observation details.
If you are comparing services as well as individual stations, check a few practical things before relying on one: whether it covers your location, whether it offers the fuel grade you need, and how it gets and updates prices. Map and list views, saved stations, alerts and price-cycle graphs can help, but availability varies by service and place. A feature is useful only if it supports the decision you are trying to make.
How to decide whether a detour is worth it
Compare the saving on the fuel you expect to buy with the extra cost and inconvenience of reaching the cheaper station. A simple starting calculation is:
Potential fuel-price saving = litres you plan to buy × difference in price per litre.
For example, the price difference must be multiplied by the amount you intend to purchase; the per-litre gap alone is not the amount saved. Then consider the additional driving needed to reach the station. That detour has a cost that depends on your vehicle, route and circumstances, so there is no single distance that makes a cheaper station worthwhile for every driver.
Use the route, not just the straight-line distance, to judge convenience. A station that appears close on a map may require a substantial diversion, while another a little farther away may be directly along the road you are already taking. Also consider the purpose of the trip: making a special journey solely to buy fuel is a different decision from choosing between two stops on an existing trip.
When the apparent saving is small, a station already on your route is usually easier to justify than one that requires a special trip. You can also compare the effective price after a discount, but only when the offer applies to you. Do not assume that a displayed incentive is automatic or that it can be combined with every other offer.
Choose a service that covers your location
Fuel-price information is organized differently by country and, in some cases, by state or territory. These examples are specific to the locations described; they are not a single worldwide directory.

| United Kingdom | Fuel Finder supplies fuel-price data to third-party apps and websites. As of the UK government announcement on 8 October 2026, Google Maps had started showing near-real-time petrol and diesel prices using Fuel Finder data. The announcement also named Waze, Petrol Prices, the AA, Confused.com and RAC Fuel Watch as services already using the data. | Forecourts covered by Fuel Finder must report price changes within 30 minutes. The government announcement said around 99% of fuel sold on UK roads was reflected in the scheme; that is a scheme-wide figure, not a guarantee that an individual listing is current or correct. |
| Australia | Australian government consumer guidance recommends checking state or territory tools where available. Examples include NSW FuelCheck, which the guide says also compares ACT prices; FuelCheck TAS; MyFuelNT; and Western Australia’s FuelWatch. Queensland publishes a list of third-party apps and websites using its reporting data, and South Australia’s consumer agency lists services. | Coverage and reporting arrangements differ between jurisdictions. The ACCC’s 2024 report describes comprehensive government-run services in Western Australia, New South Wales and the ACT, the Northern Territory, and Tasmania. It says commercial services such as MotorMouth and PetrolSpy aim for Australia-wide coverage, while many commercial services are not comprehensive. |
For Australia, government consumer guidance recommends entering a postcode or suburb and choosing the preferred petrol type. That is a useful way to start even if you already know the name of a comparison service: location and fuel selection help narrow the results to stations that are relevant to your purchase. Before planning around a particular listing, check that the tool covers the state or territory and stations you expect to use.
Do not assume that a service’s national or regional label means that every station is represented. The ACCC’s 2024 report distinguishes government-run comprehensive services in several jurisdictions from commercial services that seek broad coverage but may not be comprehensive. It also notes that collection approaches in Victoria differ, and that the method used there can affect accuracy or coverage. If an expected station is missing, try a local government-listed service or another provider rather than treating the first map as a complete directory.
Why two apps can show different prices
A price-comparison service can rely on several kinds of information: government transparency schemes, commercial data providers, retailer point-of-sale information or reports submitted by users. Some services combine sources. The source and reporting process affect which stations appear, how often prices change in the app and how much local coverage you get.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has warned that many commercial Australian services are not comprehensive. Its 2024 report also notes that collection approaches vary in Victoria, where the method used can affect accuracy or coverage. A map with many pins in one area is not proof that every nearby station is included.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTerms such as “real-time” or “near-real-time” describe how information is presented or updated; they do not make every listing a live, guaranteed pump quote. If the service provides a timestamp, check it. If it does not, treat the price as a comparison lead and verify it at the station.
Different sources also have different reporting arrangements. A government reporting feed may be subject to local rules, while a commercial service can combine information from data providers, retailers or users. Do not infer that two apps share the same data simply because they show similar stations, or that one is more accurate everywhere. When the choice matters, compare the update details each service exposes and confirm the price at the forecourt.
What UK drivers should know about Fuel Finder
Fuel Finder is a UK government service that makes forecourt prices available to third-party apps and websites. Covered forecourts are required to report price changes within 30 minutes. That reporting requirement can make comparisons more useful, but it does not remove the need to check the price at the pump.

On 8 October 2026, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero announced that Google Maps had begun showing petrol and diesel prices in the UK using Fuel Finder data. The same announcement said around 99% of fuel sold on UK roads was reflected in the scheme and estimated that comparing prices could save a household with a car around £40 a year. The £40 figure is a government estimate, not a promised or typical saving for every household; actual results depend on where and when a driver buys fuel and how they use the comparison.

In the same announcement, Energy Consumers Minister Polly Billington said that showing near-real-time prices in Google Maps would help drivers find a deal and save money at the pump. Google’s Director of Global Product Partnerships for Geo, Sarah-Jayne Williams, said integrating Fuel Finder data into Google Maps and Waze gives drivers visibility on nearby pump prices and helps them make choices for their budgets. Those statements describe the UK integration; they do not mean that every mapping service in every country uses the same feed.
The announcement named Waze, Petrol Prices, the AA, Confused.com and RAC Fuel Watch among the services already using Fuel Finder data. Its Google Maps update and named integrations are specific to the UK and the announcement date. If you rely on a particular app, check its current features and coverage rather than assuming an integration is available everywhere or unchanged.
If an app listing does not match the roadside sign or pump, the UK government provides a Fuel Finder discrepancy reporting service. Include the forecourt details and when and where you saw the mismatch. A photo or screenshot is optional evidence that can help document what appeared.
What Australian drivers should know
Australian government consumer guidance advises entering a postcode or suburb and choosing the preferred petrol type when checking prices. It recommends using state or territory tools where available because schemes and coverage differ. Check the relevant local government guidance before relying on a service for a particular town or route.

In that survey, 44% of Australian motorists reported using fuel-price apps or websites to shop for fuel in 2022, compared with 28% in 2019 and 19% in 2017. The share reporting use of a fuel-price app was 34% in 2022, 19% in 2019 and 8% in 2017. These are Australian survey results for those years, not a current global usage estimate.
The figures show that reported use of fuel-price comparison tools grew over those survey years, but they should not be read as a measure of today’s use or of how much an individual driver saves. An app or website can help identify candidates; the result still depends on coverage, the fuel selected, the route and the price actually available when you arrive.

Make map and app results more useful
Search along the journey, not just around you
If you are already driving somewhere, nearby results around your starting point may not be the most useful ones. Search around a destination or compare stations along the planned route. This helps reveal whether a lower price is reachable without adding a separate trip.
Use map and list views for different decisions
A map helps you see whether a station is conveniently located; a list makes it easier to scan prices and distances. If a service offers both, use the list to spot candidates and the map or route view to judge whether the stop makes sense.
Read incentives as conditions, not guaranteed savings
Some tools show retailer-specific discounts or other incentives, and some features may require signing in. Check eligibility, how the discount is applied and whether the final price is displayed before treating it as a saving. Compare the price you can actually pay, not an offer that does not apply to your account or purchase.
When comparing an offer with a listed pump price, check whether the offer changes the price at the pump or is applied another way, and whether it requires a particular account or purchase. The important figure is your effective price after conditions you can meet—not a headline discount detached from its terms. If those terms are unclear, leave the discount out of the comparison.
Consider optional convenience features
Price alerts, saved stations and price-cycle graphs can help if the service offers them in your area. Their presence and usefulness vary by app and location, so choose a tool based on the feature you need rather than assuming every service has the same options. If you consult a phone while travelling, set up the search before driving or have a passenger handle it; do not use an app in a way that distracts you behind the wheel.
A phone mount is an optional convenience if you use navigation, but it is not needed to compare prices and does not make it safe to interact with an app while driving. Choose and position any phone accessory in a way that does not obstruct your view, and enter your search before setting off or ask a passenger to manage it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Check whether the listing refers to the same station and the same fuel grade as the pump.
- Look for the listing’s update time or any note about its source, if the service shows one.
- Use the price displayed at the pump as the purchase-time check.
- If reporting is available, record the station, date and time, and where you observed the differing price. Keep a screenshot or photo if useful and permitted.

When documenting a mismatch, be specific about what you compared: the station, the fuel type or grade, the displayed price, the date and time, and whether you saw the listing in an app, on a website, at a roadside sign or at the pump. In the UK, a photo or screenshot is optional, but can help show what you observed. Avoid treating a discrepancy as proof that a service is generally unreliable; it may reflect an update delay, a difference in station or grade, or a local reporting process.
Bottom line
Use a comparison tool that covers your location, filter for the fuel your vehicle needs, and weigh price against route, freshness and discounts you can actually claim. Treat app prices as a way to find candidates, not a substitute for checking the pump. For the UK, Fuel Finder supports participating apps and websites with mandated updates for covered forecourts; in Australia, government tools and commercial services vary by jurisdiction and collection method.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find the cheapest fuel near me?
Open a comparison app, website or map that covers your area, search by current location or postcode, select the fuel grade you need, then compare price, route and update information. Check the pump price before filling up.
Are fuel-price app listings always current?
No. Update practices and coverage vary by service and location, and a “real-time” or “near-real-time” label is not a guarantee of the price at the pump. Check any timestamp or source details shown, then confirm at the station.
Which fuel-price service should I use in Australia?
Start with the government service or consumer-agency recommendations for your state or territory. Examples include NSW FuelCheck, FuelCheck TAS, MyFuelNT and Western Australia’s FuelWatch; Queensland and South Australia also publish information about services. Coverage differs, so check local details.
What should I do if a UK app price differs from the pump?
Use the UK government’s Fuel Finder discrepancy reporting service. Provide the forecourt details and when and where you observed the mismatch; a photo or screenshot is optional evidence.
Is it worth driving farther for a lower price?
There is no universal break-even distance. Multiply the per-litre difference by the litres you plan to buy, then weigh that potential saving against the extra driving and inconvenience. A cheaper station already on your route is often easier to justify than a special trip.
