What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes. For ordinary home use, you can generally leave a router on around the clock; NETGEAR says its routers are designed for continuous operation. The right choice changes when you will be away for a long time, when connected devices need internet access, or when the router is repeatedly restarting or behaving abnormally. Check your specific model’s manual and your internet provider’s instructions for exceptions.
Is it safe to leave a router on all the time?
Continuous operation is normal for many home routers. NETGEAR’s guidance is specific to its products, so it should not be treated as a guarantee for every router model or installation. For model-specific directions, consult the manufacturer’s manual or support page.

A router being warm does not, by itself, establish that it is faulty. Some devices that communicate continuously or handle substantial processing can become warm. Give the router room to ventilate, keep it away from heat sources, and use the power adapter supplied for that model. TP-Link gives these placement and adapter recommendations in its router overheating guidance.
Place it for airflow
- Keep the router in an open, well-ventilated location rather than inside a router box or enclosed shelf.
- Keep it away from direct sunlight, heaters, and other appliances that produce heat.
- Use its supplied adapter rather than an unverified replacement.
Router designs differ. For example, ASUS says the RT-AX89X has a built-in fan that starts when the router is powered and adjusts to environmental and system temperatures; it recommends leaving that fan on Auto. ASUS warns that disabling the fan under high load can trigger overheating protection and reduce performance. This is guidance for that model, not a general setting or cooling rule for all routers (ASUS RT-AX89X fan guidance).

TP-Link Japan says the heat described on its support page for the products it covers is not a fire danger, while also advising users to clean dust around outlets to reduce tracking-fire risk. That statement is limited to the products and locale covered by the page; it is not a universal safety guarantee for every router or electrical installation (TP-Link Japan heat guidance).
Does leaving a router on use a lot of electricity?
An always-on router uses electricity, and its actual consumption varies by model and operating state. NETGEAR publishes adapter ratings for listed models and says a router’s consumption does not exceed its adapter’s rating. That rating is an upper bound, not a measurement of typical use. The cited NETGEAR page does not give a single typical household wattage or annual cost, so it cannot support a reliable universal estimate (NETGEAR router power consumption information).

| Choice | Electricity | Connected devices and remote access | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leave the router on | It continues to use power. | Internet-dependent cameras, smart-home devices, appliances, and remote access can remain available, subject to their own service and power status. | Overnight, or during an absence when you need those services. |
| Turn the router off | Reduces the router’s power use while it is off. | Internet-dependent devices and remote access lose their connection. | A longer or seasonal absence when the home has no devices or services that need an internet connection. |
NETGEAR says turning off a router during a seasonal absence may save power if no connected IoT devices need internet access, while leaving it on is also an option. Its recommendation applies to NETGEAR routers; the practical trade-off is the same to assess for any model (NETGEAR guidance on switching off a router).
Is turning off Wi-Fi the same as switching off the router?
No. Disabling Wi-Fi radios stops wireless connections but may leave the router and its wired-network functions powered. Reducing transmit power changes wireless coverage rather than powering down the router. A scheduled restart is different again: it reboots the whole router and interrupts the network.

Does a router need to be rebooted regularly?
The available manufacturer guidance does not establish that every router needs routine reboots. If your model supports scheduled restarts, you can choose to use that feature, but it is optional rather than a universal maintenance requirement.

On supported ASUS routers, the restart schedule is in Administration > System > Basic Config > Enable Reboot Scheduler. ASUS says restart time varies by model, at about one to three minutes, and the network disconnects during the reboot. If you enable a schedule, set it for a time when nobody needs the connection (ASUS scheduled-restart instructions).
What to check if the router keeps restarting
Frequent or unexplained restarts are a troubleshooting issue, not a reason to adopt nightly shutoffs. Work through low-risk checks first and use instructions for your exact model:
- Check placement and ventilation. Move the router into open air, away from heat sources, and clear dust from the surrounding area.
- Check the power supply. Confirm that the supplied adapter is being used and that it is securely connected. Replace it only if it is damaged or suspect, and match the exact specifications listed for the router.
- Check the power source. Try a different outlet. If restarts coincide with power interruptions, NETGEAR suggests using a UPS; choose one based on the router’s power requirements and the backup runtime you need (NETGEAR troubleshooting for repeated restarts).
- Check firmware and restart schedules. Install applicable firmware updates and confirm that an automatic reboot schedule has not been enabled unintentionally. TP-Link lists unstable power, an incorrect adapter, poor ventilation, outdated firmware, and an enabled auto-reboot schedule among possible causes (TP-Link restart troubleshooting).
- Consider a factory reset only after other steps fail. A reset clears the router’s configuration, so you may need to set up its network again. Follow the model’s reset instructions and make sure you have the information needed to restore service.
If the router remains unusually hot, repeatedly restarts, or performs poorly after these checks, contact the manufacturer or your internet provider with the exact model information.
