Sometimes—but OpenWrt does not work on every router, and support can differ between hardware revisions of the same model. Check your exact model and revision in OpenWrt’s device database before downloading anything. The right image and first-install method must match that specific hardware; choosing by brand alone risks a failed installation or a bricked device.
Check whether your exact router is supported
Find the complete model name and hardware revision on the router’s label or in its administration interface. Then search OpenWrt’s Table of Hardware and open the matching device page. A listing for a model family does not mean every revision is supported.

On that device page, check the currently supported release, first-install instructions, required image, known limitations, and any revision- or bootloader-specific cautions. Pay particular attention to wireless support: a device may boot OpenWrt while some functions, including radio features, are unsupported or limited. Treat the device-specific entry as more important than a general hardware threshold.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteOpenWrt’s Supported Devices guidance gives 8 MB of flash and 64 MB of RAM as bare minimum figures, and describes 16 MB of flash and 128 MB of RAM as better. These are general hardware guidelines, not a guarantee that a particular router has enough usable space or supports the features you need. The project explicitly warns against buying devices with 8 MB flash and 64 MB RAM for an up-to-date, secure OpenWrt installation. Total flash-chip capacity can also overstate usable space, especially on devices with dual firmware.

Know which firmware image and procedure you need
Moving from a manufacturer’s firmware to OpenWrt is a first installation, often called a factory install. It is not the same as upgrading a router that already runs OpenWrt. The device page and OpenWrt’s sysupgrade guide explain which image and process apply.
| Situation | What to check |
|---|---|
| Router currently runs manufacturer firmware | Use the exact model’s first-install procedure and factory-compatible image. Follow the device page; do not assume a generic image or upgrade file will work. |
| Router already runs OpenWrt | Use the sysupgrade instructions and image for that device and release. Sysupgrade replaces the OpenWrt installation; see the upgrade section below for data and package considerations. |
OpenWrt’s Firmware Selector can help identify available builds, but an image name is not universal. Confirm it against the exact device entry and its instructions before flashing.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Reduce the chance of a failed flash
- Confirm the hardware. Match the full model and hardware revision to the device page. Stop if you cannot establish which revision you have.
- Read the complete device-specific procedure. Check for special installation steps, unsupported functions, bootloader caveats, and recovery instructions. Procedures can vary even among supported devices. For example, the OpenWrt installation guide links to device-specific procedures; its MikroTik common procedures page illustrates how instructions can depend on device and bootloader version. Do not apply a brand-specific procedure to another router.
- Download the image from the official source specified for your device. Check that the file matches the required image type and exact hardware.
- Verify the checksum. Compare the downloaded file’s calculated checksum with the published checksum. OpenWrt warns not to proceed if they differ: a corrupt image can brick the device.
- Prepare a wired connection where the device permits it. Keep the router connected by Ethernet during the procedure, and save any configuration details you may need.
- Follow the steps in order. Do not interrupt power or improvise around an error. If the image, revision, or procedure does not match, stop rather than trying a file intended for a similar model.
Understand the risks and recovery limits
The main practical risk is using the wrong or corrupt firmware, or following instructions that do not apply to the router’s exact revision. OpenWrt does not provide a general failure-rate figure, so it would be misleading to attach a probability to the risk. Nor should you assume every router can be restored to its manufacturer firmware: use only a recovery or rollback method documented for your exact device.

Another option is to use a separate router or access point that has a verified OpenWrt device entry; check that hardware’s exact revision and requirements before relying on it.

If you already run OpenWrt, plan for sysupgrade changes
A sysupgrade replaces the existing OpenWrt installation and restores only the configuration files specified for preservation. Back up custom files you need and expect to reinstall packages you added manually. This describes OpenWrt-to-OpenWrt upgrades; it does not establish what will happen during a manufacturer-firmware installation or provide a rollback method.
