As of October 4, 2026, Asahi Linux does not list an installer for the M4 Mac mini, M4 MacBook Pro, or M4 MacBook Air models in its support table. That means there is no documented, supported native installation path for those M4 Macs in the official sources cited here. Do not follow an M1 or M2 installation tutorial on an M4 and assume it will work. [Asahi M4 feature-support table]
Is Linux installable on an M4 Mac?
Not through a supported Asahi installer, according to the project’s live M4 feature-support table accessed October 4, 2026. The table covers M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max systems and marks the installer unavailable for the listed M4 Mac mini (2024), 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro (November 2024), and 13-inch and 15-inch M4 MacBook Air (2025). It also shows substantial platform features as TBA or WIP; Asahi defines TBA as work not currently being undertaken and provides no estimate for unavailable features. [Asahi M4 feature-support table]

Asahi’s homepage and Fedora Asahi Remix pages describe an installation route and supported systems generally, but they do not override the model-specific status. Fedora’s current device information describes M1 and M2 families, while the M4 table says “Installer | no.” Check the live M4 table before acting because compatibility status can change. Why M1 or M2 installation instructions do not transfer
For supported Macs, Asahi’s normal process starts from macOS and configures dual boot. Its FAQ says an internal macOS installation is needed for installation and remains useful for m1n1 maintenance and resizing an active installation. Those are general requirements for supported devices—not instructions that make an M4 installable. [Asahi Linux FAQ]
The FAQ also says to reserve 38 GB of free space for macOS upgrades, with additional space required for Linux. Expert mode can bypass the check, but using it with too little remaining space can prevent macOS updates. This space guidance applies to the supported-device installer and is not evidence of M4 compatibility. [Asahi Linux FAQ]
Why a USB drive is not a normal M4 workaround
The Asahi FAQ states: “Apple Silicon hardware does not support booting from USB storage, at all.” The project’s boot guide describes a special UEFI-only arrangement for developer or rescue/installer images, but that is not the normal installed Asahi boot method and does not provide a supported M4 installation path. In the normal Asahi boot flow, the EFI system partition is on internal NVMe storage. A generic ARM image on an external drive therefore should not be treated as a substitute for a supported model-specific installer. [Asahi boot-process guide]
What the Asahi boot chain means for troubleshooting
On an existing supported installation, startup passes through several components before Linux loads: Apple boot components, m1n1 stage 1, m1n1 stage 2, device-tree data and U-Boot, then GRUB and Linux. A failure before the desktop appears may involve boot selection, m1n1, U-Boot, device-tree data, or component versions rather than a Linux desktop setting. [Asahi boot-process guide]
The boot guide notes that kernel hardware support can depend on initialization performed by m1n1 and on device-tree updates. On supported systems, the guide advises keeping device trees updated with kernel updates and updating m1n1 for major new support. These maintenance notes do not turn an unsupported M4 configuration into a supported one. [Asahi boot-process guide]
Fixes for boot and installation issues on an existing supported Asahi Mac
The steps below address situations documented by Asahi for existing installations or supported-device installs. They cannot create M4 support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMac starts macOS instead of Asahi
macOS may simply be the selected default boot medium. To choose Asahi on a device with a valid installation:

- BTO Mac Mini Desktop Computer - Power Cord - Apple 1 Year Limited Warranty with 90 Day Free Technical Support
- Apple M1 chip with 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU
- 16-core Neural Engine
- 16GB unified memory
- 1TB SSD storage
- Shut down the Mac.
- Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to enter One True Recovery (1TR).
- Select Asahi while holding Option, or unlock the macOS settings in 1TR and set the bootloader to reboot into Asahi.
These boot-selection steps are from the Asahi FAQ and apply only if Asahi is already installed and valid. [Asahi Linux FAQ]
“Storage system verify or repair failed”
Asahi’s FAQ identifies this message as existing APFS filesystem corruption that prevents the installer from resizing the filesystem. Follow the repair guidance linked from the FAQ rather than treating the error as proof that the installer itself caused the corruption. [Asahi Linux FAQ]
The APFS container cannot be shrunk enough
Time Machine snapshots can occupy space that appears free, leaving the APFS container larger than the requested minimum after resizing. Use the official guidance linked from the FAQ; avoid arbitrary partition changes. [Asahi Linux FAQ]
Repeated installation attempts return the Mac to Recovery OS
The FAQ reports that a boot loop into Recovery OS during repeated system installation may result from an Apple bug triggered after installing an OS too many times. Asahi describes this as the most likely cause for the reported behavior, not an M4-specific diagnosis. Use the issue reference linked in the FAQ for the documented case. [Asahi Linux FAQ]
Partition cleanup or Disk Utility changes
Asahi warns that Disk Utility is unsuitable for complex Asahi partition layouts and says there is no automated uninstaller. Cleanup requires manually deleting partitions. Consult the project’s partitioning cheatsheet linked from the FAQ before modifying partitions; deleting the wrong one can affect macOS or booting. [Asahi Linux FAQ]
Kernel update or newly supported hardware feature
On Fedora Asahi Remix, the FAQ says a reinstall is normally unnecessary to receive new features: run dnf upgrade and reboot for kernel updates. Because boot components and device trees can have version dependencies, use the project’s maintenance guidance for the installed system rather than trying this as an M4 workaround. [Asahi Linux FAQ] [Asahi boot-process guide]
What to check if M4 support becomes available
Before using any future installation instructions, confirm they explicitly cover the exact Mac model and SoC. The M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max labels alone do not establish that a particular model’s installer, display, storage, keyboard and trackpad, networking, graphics, or power management work. Check the project’s feature table for component status and distinguish a supported end-user release from developer testing. [Asahi M4 feature-support table] [Asahi boot-process guide]
