You can start Critical Role Campaign 4 with episode 1; you do not need to watch the earlier campaigns first. Campaign 4 tells a new story in Aramán, a setting outside the earlier campaigns’ Exandria, and is presented for newcomers as well as returning viewers. The simplest plan is to follow the official episode index in order and use its recaps or lore pages when you want a refresher.
Do you need to watch earlier Critical Role campaigns?
No. Critical Role describes Campaign 4 as a new story and welcomes people who are discovering the show for the first time. It takes place in Aramán rather than Exandria, the setting of the earlier campaigns. Its official premise follows Thjazi Fang and people from his life who come together after he is marked for execution. See the Campaign Four page and Critical Role’s introduction to Campaign Four.

Earlier campaigns may be enjoyable if you later want more Critical Role, but they are not stated to be prerequisites for understanding this story.
Where should you start?
- Open the official Campaign Four page.
- Choose episode 1, then follow the episode index in order. Starting at the beginning gives you the characters’ introductions and the context for later events.
- Use the episode recaps and lore resources on the campaign page if you need to refresh a plot detail or remember a character. They are reference material, not a documented episode-by-episode abridged substitute for watching the campaign.
Where can you watch or listen?
Critical Role’s viewing FAQ lists Beacon, Twitch, and YouTube as viewing options. Beacon is not required: it offers earlier VOD access, while Twitch and YouTube are other official ways to watch. Check the viewing FAQ for general routes and the Campaign Four page for current episode details.

No purchase is needed to catch up. Critical Role says Campaign Four uses the 2024 rules, but you can follow the story without buying a rulebook. The 2024 Player’s Handbook is an optional reference if you are interested in the mechanics; it is not a viewing prerequisite. See Critical Role’s Campaign Four introduction.
