Yes. You can install and use more than one web browser on the same device. Your operating system’s default-browser setting determines which browser normally opens links from other apps; it does not remove the others. On desktop Windows, macOS and Linux, you can also open any installed browser directly. Mobile installation and default-browser rules vary by operating system, version and region.
What does the default browser setting do?
The default browser is the app your device normally launches when you tap or click a web link in another application. It is separate from the search engine you choose inside a browser. Making one browser the default does not stop you from opening another installed browser yourself, and changing the default does not uninstall any browser. Mozilla explains the distinction and provides platform-specific setup steps; Google notes that links open automatically in Chrome when it is set as the default.

Set the default browser on a desktop
- Windows 11: Open Settings → Apps → Default apps, select the browser, and set it as the default. If links still open elsewhere, check the relevant link and file associations, such as HTTP and HTTPS.
- Windows 10: Open Settings → Apps → Default apps → Web browser, then choose a browser.
- macOS: Open System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Default web browser. On older macOS Monterey versions, use System Preferences → General.
- Linux: Choose a browser under Default Applications in GNOME or Default Applications in KDE System Settings.
Menu names can differ between operating-system versions. If a path does not match your screen, search Settings for “Default apps” or “Default web browser.”

A second browser is optional, but it can be useful when you want to compare how a site behaves, use a browser-specific feature or extension, keep a workflow separate, or test a website in another browser. Consider whether the browser supports your devices and sites, offers the extensions you need, and has account syncing you want. Also decide which browser should receive links opened from other apps.

If you only need separate work and personal accounts, a second browser may be more than you need. Browser profiles or containers can keep some data apart without requiring another browser installation, though the information they separate varies.

Choose based on what you need to keep apart—such as settings, bookmarks, extensions, cookies, logins or tabs—and whether the feature is available on your device. Syncing may also make data available across devices or profiles, depending on the browser and account settings.

Does Windows S mode limit browser choice?
Yes. In Windows 11 S mode, Microsoft says Edge remains the default browser. You can use other browsers available through Microsoft Store, but installing a browser from outside the Store requires switching out of S mode. Microsoft warns that switching out is permanent, so check the consequences before proceeding. This restriction applies to S mode, not to all Windows computers. Read Microsoft’s Windows 11 S mode FAQ.

Simply installing a second browser does not establish a security benefit. Browser safety depends on the features you use and how you manage each browser. For example, Microsoft documents SmartScreen checks for known threats and tracking-prevention settings in Edge. Those feature descriptions are not guarantees that risk is eliminated.
