Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYes, it is possible—but clicking a link alone does not prove your device or account has been compromised. The risk depends on what happened next: you might have entered credentials on a fake page, shared financial details, or downloaded a malicious file. If you only opened the page and did none of those things, close it and follow the steps below without assuming the worst.
What can happen when you click a phishing link?
A page may try to steal information
A phishing page can imitate a real service and ask you to enter a username, password, payment details, or other personal information. If you submit those details, a scammer may be able to use them to access an account or commit fraud. Opening the page and submitting information are different events; the click itself does not establish that your information was exposed. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains these risks in its phishing guidance.

A link may lead to a harmful download
A link can also lead to malware being downloaded. A download or suspected infection changes the response: stop using the possibly affected device to sign in to sensitive accounts, update security software, and run a scan. The FTC’s malware guidance recommends these steps and notes that malware can go undetected temporarily, so a lack of obvious symptoms does not prove a device is clean.
There is no reliable percentage for the risk from a click alone
The official guidance cited here describes possible outcomes and what to do, but does not quantify the chance that merely opening a phishing link compromises a device. There is no sound basis here for saying that every click causes a hack—or that every click is harmless.

What to do, based on what happened
You opened the page but entered nothing and downloaded nothing
- Close the page and do not interact with it further.
- Keep your browser and device updated.
- If you later notice a download or unusual device behavior, follow the malware steps below.
A click with no information entered or file downloaded is not, by itself, proof of compromise. The steps above are proportionate precautions, not a diagnostic test that can certify the device is safe.
You entered a password
- Use a trusted device or a clean session to change the affected password.
- Change it anywhere else you reused it, and enable multifactor authentication (MFA) on the accounts involved.
- Contact the service through its official website or a phone number you already know is genuine.
- If you used a work or school account, notify your IT team.
Microsoft’s phishing guidance also recommends recording what information you shared, changing affected and reused passwords, enabling MFA, and notifying work or school IT where relevant.

- If you shared personal identity details, use IdentityTheft.gov for tailored recovery steps.
Do not use contact details supplied in the suspicious message or on the page you visited.
A file downloaded or you suspect malware
- Stop signing in to accounts on the possibly affected device.
- Update its security software and run a scan.
- Follow the security tool’s findings. If you need help, contact the device manufacturer or a support provider you trust.
- From a trusted device, change passwords that may have been exposed and enable two-factor authentication where available.
The FTC advises stopping sensitive logins, updating security software, scanning, and changing passwords and enabling two-factor authentication as appropriate when malware may be involved. A paid security product is not identified as a requirement.

How to report the message and verify whether it was real
Contact the organization through a phone number or website you already trust—not through the link or contact information in the message. Then report the message using the relevant route:
- Forward phishing email to [email protected].
- Forward phishing text messages to SPAM (7726).
- Report the scam to ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- For messages in Outlook or Teams, use Microsoft’s reporting options described in its phishing guidance.
After reporting, delete the message. If you believe a work or school account is involved, follow your organization’s reporting procedure as well.

Reduce the damage if a password was exposed
Change exposed and reused passwords, then enable MFA for important accounts. The FTC says, “Multi-factor authentication makes it harder for scammers to log in to your accounts if they do get your username and password.” MFA can use different factors, including a security key. A security key can add an authentication step, but it does not scan or clean a device, determine whether a link was malicious, or undo a click.
