For a fully online option, Capitol Technology University’s PhD in Financial Cybersecurity, National University’s PhD in Cybersecurity, and the University of Southern Mississippi’s Computer Science PhD are distinct possibilities; only the first two have cybersecurity in the degree title. Compare research fit, delivery requirements, credit load, and funding before treating any program as the best choice.
What counts as an online cybersecurity doctorate?
There is no single format or degree type. Some schools title the degree “Cybersecurity,” while others offer a related discipline in which cybersecurity is one research area. “Online” can mean no required travel, a mix of online and campus activities, or simply that some courses are offered remotely. The program’s current official page—not an older listing or a broad online roundup—is the authority for its delivery rules.

- Cybersecurity is the degree title: Capitol Technology University offers a PhD in Financial Cybersecurity; National University offers a PhD in Cybersecurity.
- Cybersecurity is a research area: Southern Mississippi’s Computer Science PhD includes cybersecurity research, but the degree is in computer science.
- Cybersecurity is part of a broader policy title: Augusta University’s PhD in Intelligence, Defense & Cybersecurity Policy is policy-oriented; confirm its current format and specific enrollment requirements directly with the university.
A doctorate is most directly suited to people who want to conduct original research, pursue academic work, or lead research programs. It may also support research-oriented roles in government or industry, but a doctorate does not guarantee a particular job or salary. For many experienced practitioners targeting senior applied roles, a master’s degree and relevant certifications may be a more time- and cost-efficient route.

The options below are not a universal ranking. The Cybersecurity Guide’s 2027 roundup says it considered roughly ten U.S. programs using CAE designation, research and faculty strength, tuition, delivery flexibility, and GRE policy. That is one publication’s methodology, not an objective or exhaustive definition of “best.” It lists Capitol Technology University, Mississippi State University, and Dakota State University near the top, but the figures and format claims for the latter two are not established here against current official program pages. Confirm all details with each school before applying.

Programs that should not be presented as online options without a current change
Old Dominion University’s current PhD in Cybersecurity FAQ says the program is in-person only, so it should not be included in an online shortlist based on older proposals or third-party listings. The FAQ also says financial support is competitive and admission does not guarantee support.

Augusta University’s PhD in Intelligence, Defense & Cybersecurity Policy is a separate policy-oriented option to investigate, not a verified fully online recommendation here. Its admissions page includes Fall 2027 deadlines and says the school cannot issue F-1 or J-1 documentation for enrollment in this online program. Confirm the current curriculum, delivery requirements, and implications for your situation directly with the university.
How much does an online cybersecurity PhD cost?
Published tuition is only one part of the cost. The Cybersecurity Guide’s 2026 comparison reports average tuition of $74,228 across ten online cybersecurity PhD programs, with a low of $42,750 and a high of $127,920. Those are the guide’s compiled comparison figures, based on tuition inputs it says came from IPEDS, College Navigator, and university pages—not a federal statistic, a net-price estimate, or a substitute for current school billing information. Its comparison should not be assumed to cover every adjacent doctorate or bachelor’s-entry route.

Capitol Technology University’s published 2026–27 rate is $980 per credit plus a $55-per-credit IT fee. At the listed 60-credit minimum, the arithmetic for those two per-credit charges alone is $62,100 before any other charges or added credits; the school notes that dissertation or publication research may add credits. This is not a quoted total program bill. Ask the university for a student-specific estimate.
When requesting cost information, ask for:
- Tuition and mandatory fees for every required credit, including dissertation or research credits.
- Whether the quoted rate depends on residency, course load, or academic year, and whether it can change while you are enrolled.
- Any technology, enrollment, dissertation, defense, or campus-visit expenses not included in the per-credit rate.
- Assistantships, fellowships, employer benefits, and other aid available specifically to online doctoral students.
How to choose the right program
Start with the research question you want to pursue, not the school’s ranking position. A strong fit requires faculty who can supervise that work, a research model and methods that suit it, and a delivery structure you can realistically complete.

- Define the research and career goal. Decide whether you need a cybersecurity-titled degree, a computer science doctorate with cybersecurity research, or a policy-focused doctorate. Identify whether your aim is academic research, teaching, government research, or research leadership.
- Check advisor alignment. Review current faculty research and ask whether an appropriate advisor is accepting doctoral students. A broad program label is not evidence that a school can supervise your specific topic.
- Verify delivery in writing. Ask whether courses are synchronous or asynchronous, whether any residency or campus visit is required, and whether research meetings, dissertation milestones, or the defense can require travel. Get the answer for your intended program and cohort.
- Compare entry routes and completion rules. Confirm prerequisites, how prior graduate study is counted, total credits for your entry point, dissertation requirements, and the maximum time allowed to finish. The credit pathways at Southern Mississippi and Capitol Tech are school-specific, not field-wide norms.
- Build a complete cost and funding estimate. Use the current official tuition page and include fees, research credits, and any travel. Ask whether online students are eligible for the funding you would need.
- Check the next application cycle. Confirm deadlines, start terms, required materials, and whether the published deadline applies to your specific program. Do not infer a cybersecurity program’s deadline from a college-wide admissions page.
- Verify accreditation and designations separately. Check institutional accreditation and any claimed active program designation directly with the relevant official sources. A designation or accreditation claim alone does not establish that the program’s research, advising, or format fits your needs.
Are online cybersecurity PhDs respected, and are they worth it?
“Online” by itself does not establish the quality or value of a doctorate. Evaluate the awarding institution, the faculty and dissertation supervision, the rigor and originality expected of the research, and the program’s fit with the roles you want. Confirm institutional accreditation and any program-specific designation independently; do not treat a label as a substitute for evaluating the doctoral work.

A doctorate is most defensible when original research or academic credentials are central to your goal. It can also make sense for research leadership in government or industry when the work itself benefits from doctoral-level research training. If your target is a senior practitioner role that chiefly values hands-on experience, a doctorate may require substantially more time and expense than the role calls for. No salary premium or career outcome is established by the program facts above. National University’s displayed occupational statistics concern information security analysts generally, not graduates of its PhD program, so they should not be read as doctorate outcomes.
