Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf your retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipeline sends a dozen possibly relevant chunks to a model, a compactor can reduce that context by selecting which documents to keep. In a 2026 article, author gj0xv reports roughly 70% fewer retrieved-context tokens in two 200-question evaluations. The result was not identical across both: SQuAD exact match stayed the same, while HotpotQA exact match fell. Those figures are specific to the reported setup, not a guarantee for other RAG workloads.
How the compactor is reported to work
The article describes laya-compactor as a local Python tool that scores a batch of retrieved documents and keeps higher-scoring documents within a token budget. The described scoring scale runs from 0 (irrelevant) to 3 (essential). When a document is dropped, the tool gives a reason, such as a low score or an exhausted budget.

The key distinction is selection, not summarization: retained documents are passed through verbatim rather than rewritten or paraphrased. That can preserve the wording of retained evidence, but it cannot preserve information contained only in a document that gets dropped.

What the reported evaluations found
In the 2026 article, gj0xv reports evaluations of 200 questions per dataset, using BM25 retrieval and a generator and blind judge powered by Z.ai’s GLM-5.3-flashX. The comparison was between the full retrieved context and the compacted context.

Intelligent bandwidth switching optimizes throughput in different network environments, ensuring optimal performance for enterprise or local networks. Dual 25GbE ports (providing up to approximately 3.125 GB/s bandwidth, about 25 times faster than traditional 1GbE), enabling seamless large-scale file transfers and parallel computing. 10GbE and 2.5GbE ports, with support for Intel vPro technology, ensure enterprise-grade remote management and deployment flexibility.
- Server-grade thermal architecture: Utilizing a dedicated CPU/GPU airflow design, equipped with a 6-pipe dual-fan cooler, it maintains stable performance even under sustained loads, delivering up to 140W Turbo power while maintaining a 100W TDP, and operating with noise levels as low as 36 dB. An integrated 350W power supply ensures stable and reliable output for demanding computing tasks and fully loaded extended configurations.
| Dataset | Full context | Compacted context | Reported token reduction |
|---|---|---|---|
| SQuAD | Exact match 0.345; 3,214 average tokens | Exact match 0.345; 973 average tokens | 69.7% |
| HotpotQA | Exact match 0.230; 3,193 average tokens | Exact match 0.200; 947 average tokens | 70.3% |
These are the article author’s reported results, not independently reproduced measurements. They show why “answers identical” needs qualification: SQuAD’s reported exact-match score was unchanged, but HotpotQA’s score decreased from 0.230 to 0.200 after compaction. The article also reports that 94.5% of HotpotQA gold documents were retained. That retention rate does not mean every necessary document survived for every question.
Why the HotpotQA result matters
HotpotQA is a dataset designed around questions that can require reasoning over multiple pieces of evidence; its official project page provides the dataset identity and evaluation resources. In a multi-hop question, dropping one supporting document can break the chain even if most gold documents are retained overall. The reported drop in exact match is therefore a practical warning: a similar token reduction can have a different answer-quality effect depending on the task and evidence structure.
Latency and comparison limits
Gj0xv reports a p50 CPU latency of 6.3 to 10 seconds per batch. That is a meaningful trade-off for latency-sensitive applications: reducing the context sent to a model may add a substantial compaction step before generation. The article also says head-only and tail-only truncation baselines scored worse on both datasets, but those results do not establish a general ranking against other compaction approaches.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide whether to try it
- It may be worth evaluating if your main objective is to reduce retrieved-context tokens and your workload can tolerate a compaction stage.
- Test multi-document questions explicitly. Measure answer quality on your own corpus, including cases where the answer depends on several separate chunks.
- Track more than token count. Compare exact-match or task-appropriate answer quality, supporting-evidence retention, and end-to-end latency against your uncompressed baseline.
- Do not treat unchanged SQuAD exact match as a universal guarantee. The HotpotQA result in the same article shows a quality decrease under another evaluation.
The article describes a Python API as laya_compactor.compact, a command-line tool installed as laya-compactor, and example integrations with LangChain’s ContextualCompressionRetriever and a LlamaIndex node postprocessor. These are the author’s described usage examples; their operation and the benchmark results were not independently tested here. Consult the article for its examples and evaluate the tool in your own pipeline before relying on a token budget or quality outcome.
