If you want a wired connection, check for HDMI ARC/eARC first. Optical is another option when both devices have optical ports. Bluetooth avoids a cable, but it may not support the same audio formats or functions as a wired connection.

Check compatibility before pairing
A soundbar’s ability to connect to a phone over Bluetooth does not necessarily mean it can receive TV audio over Bluetooth. Check the TV’s audio-output options and the manuals for both products to confirm that they support TV-to-soundbar Bluetooth audio. Sony’s connection guidance also emphasizes that available connections depend on the devices’ jacks and functions: Sony’s guide to connecting a TV and soundbar.
Bluetooth features are model-specific. For example, Sony says its documented Bluetooth setup can limit display of the soundbar operation screen and access to some functions. Treat that as guidance for the documented Sony setup, not a rule for every soundbar. Sony’s Bluetooth connection guidance.

Choose a connection that fits your setup

Samsung describes HDMI as its best-quality cable connection and notes that HDMI can support formats such as Dolby Digital Plus. Its format comparison also lists eARC support for Dolby TrueHD, including uncompressed Dolby Atmos. These are Samsung’s published entries for its documented setup, not a universal guarantee for all TVs and soundbars. Check the manuals and the full signal path for your devices. How to pair a soundbar with a TV over Bluetooth
- Confirm support. Check that the TV can send audio to Bluetooth devices and that the soundbar supports Bluetooth pairing with a TV.
- Put the soundbar into pairing mode. Use the soundbar’s controls or manual for its pairing procedure.
- Open the TV’s audio menu. Look for Sound, Sound Output, Bluetooth devices, or a similarly named wireless-speaker option. Menu paths vary; LG lists different routes for different webOS generations in its TV and soundbar connection guidance.
- Select the soundbar. Choose it from the available-device list, then set it as the TV’s sound output.
- Check the output if there is no sound. Make sure the TV still has the soundbar selected as its audio output and consult the manuals for model-specific settings.
If the soundbar does not appear in the list, confirm that it is still in pairing mode. Also try disconnecting it temporarily from a nearby phone or tablet: LG notes that a previously paired device may connect automatically.

There is no single Bluetooth range, latency, codec, remote-control behavior, or lip-sync result that can be promised for every TV and soundbar. Consult the product documentation for those details.

How to connect with HDMI ARC or eARC
- Find the TV’s HDMI port labelled ARC or eARC and the matching TV ARC/eARC port on the soundbar.
- Connect those two ports with an HDMI cable. Samsung recommends a cable labelled “High Speed” or “High Speed with Ethernet” for its setup; check the device manuals and any supplied cable before buying another.
- Select the soundbar as the TV’s sound output and choose the corresponding HDMI input on the soundbar, following the manufacturers’ instructions.
The ARC/eARC labels matter: an ordinary HDMI port will not send TV audio to the soundbar through audio return. LG explains this distinction in its connection guide. HDMI capabilities still depend on both devices and the audio format being used.

How to connect with an optical cable
- Connect the TV’s optical digital-audio output to the soundbar’s optical input.
- Select the optical input on the soundbar. On Samsung models, this may be labelled DIGITAL AUDIO IN (D.IN.).
- If the TV does not switch automatically, select its optical audio output in the sound settings; the menu label varies by model.
Optical is a useful wired fallback when both devices have the required ports, but it does not carry every format that HDMI can. Samsung says optical cannot transmit some higher-bitrate formats, including Dolby Digital Plus. Verify support for the format you want in both manuals.

These entries come from Samsung UK’s published comparison. The formats a system can play also depend on the TV, soundbar, source device, content, and settings, so check the exact manuals rather than assuming another brand follows the same table.
