Windows 11 does not document a built-in setting to switch grouped taskbar previews from thumbnails to a text list. On supported editions, a Microsoft policy can hide the thumbnails and show standard text tooltips, but that is not the same as selecting the older list-style preview.
Is there a Windows 11 setting for list or thumbnail previews?
No list-versus-thumbnail switch appears in Microsoft’s current taskbar customization guide. The documented controls cover options such as taskbar alignment, pinned apps, system-tray visibility, Task View, and Peek—not a choice to display grouped app windows as a text list.

Windows 11’s normal taskbar hover behavior uses thumbnail previews for grouped windows. If you want to remove those thumbnails, the documented policy described below is an option on certain editions. It does not restore a list of open windows.

Microsoft’s TaskbarNoThumbnail policy suppresses taskbar thumbnails and uses standard text for tooltips. Microsoft lists the policy for Windows 11 version 21H2 and later, with support for Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions, including IoT Enterprise LTSC.

That distinction matters: the policy removes thumbnail previews, but Microsoft does not describe it as a setting that selects a list view. If you need the previous list-style presentation specifically, this policy is not a documented equivalent.
What about the NumThumbnails registry workaround?
A Microsoft Q&A response dated May 28, 2025 says the older NumThumbnails registry workaround—setting the value to 0—used to force list-style previews in earlier Windows 10 and early Windows 11 builds, but no longer worked in the newer builds discussed in that thread. The response also said no official replacement had been provided at that time. See the Microsoft Q&A thread.

This is dated guidance about the builds discussed in 2025, not proof about every Windows 11 build released since. Because Microsoft’s current documented settings do not establish this registry edit as a reliable fix, do not rely on it to enable list previews.

| Option | What you see | Availability and support |
|---|---|---|
| Leave the default behavior | Thumbnail previews for grouped taskbar windows | Standard taskbar behavior; Microsoft does not document a built-in list-mode switch. |
| Enable TaskbarNoThumbnail | Thumbnails are hidden; standard text tooltips are used | Microsoft-documented policy for supported Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions on Windows 11 21H2 and later. |
| Use NumThumbnails registry advice | List view was reported on earlier builds; the May 2025 Q&A response says it stopped working on the newer builds discussed | Build-dependent and not established as a current reliable fix by the cited Microsoft documentation. |
Can a third-party taskbar mod provide a list?
A taskbar modification utility may offer its own preview options, but the sources cited here do not verify a current tool or its compatibility across Windows 11 builds. Check the utility’s documentation for your exact Windows version before installing it, and be prepared for an update to Windows to change or break modified taskbar behavior.
