Sometimes. It depends on which Japanese-market Switch 2 you have: the Japanese-Language System supports Japanese only, while the Multi-Language System lets you choose another supported language, including English. Check the model before changing settings.
First, identify which Japanese Switch 2 you have
Nintendo sells two Japanese-market versions, and “bought in Japan” does not by itself mean the console is Japanese-only.

Nintendo describes the Japanese-Language System as “designed for use in Japan only.” The Multi-Language System’s Japanese product page lists its release date as June 5, 2025; that date does not establish current stock or price. Change the language on a Multi-Language System
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Language.
- Choose the language you want.
- Select Restart to confirm.
The console restarts in the selected language, and any suspended software closes. Save your game and exit before confirming. Nintendo Support: Change the system language.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
If the console is in a language you cannot read
On a supported model, use the HOME Menu’s gear icon to open System Settings, then navigate to System > Language. The names of the settings will be translated, so use their position in Nintendo’s instructions as a guide rather than guessing at unfamiliar labels. Nintendo Japan also has guidance for correcting an incorrectly selected language; its screenshots show the original Switch, and Nintendo notes that Switch 2 screens differ slightly. Nintendo Japan: Language-setting guidance.
What changing the system language does—and does not do
The setting changes the console menus. Some games follow the system language, but others have a separate in-game language setting. If a game remains in another language after you change the console, check that title’s own settings; changing the system language does not override a game-specific choice. Nintendo Support: Change the system language.

Changing region will not add languages to the Japanese-only model
Region and language are separate settings. Nintendo lists these regions for supported models: Japan, the Americas, Europe, Australia/New Zealand, and Hong Kong/Taiwan/South Korea. Changing region requires accepting the applicable regional terms and restarting, and Nintendo warns that some Switch 2 models cannot change region. Nintendo Support: Change the region setting.

The Japanese-Language System has neither a Language nor a Region entry in System Settings, so changing region cannot make it display English or another system language. Its Japan-only account and eShop restrictions are separate from the language limitation.

If you need another system language
If your console is the Japanese-Language System, there is no setting that changes its system language. Nintendo’s stated alternative for people who need another language is the Nintendo Switch 2 Multi-Language System. It is a different console, not a software unlock or accessory for the Japanese-only unit. Check Nintendo or a retailer for current availability and regional details before buying.
