Yes—you can train a small language model from scratch on a CPU as a learning project. That is very different from pretraining a capable, general-purpose foundation model: the available CPU examples are deliberately small demonstrations, while the cited GPT-2 reproduction used a multi-GPU server. Your goal—learning how the model works or producing a broadly capable LLM—determines whether “no GPU” is practical.
What “from scratch” means
Training from scratch starts with newly initialized model weights and teaches the model from a training dataset. Fine-tuning instead starts with a pretrained checkpoint and continues training it on additional data. This distinction matters because a short CPU fine-tuning demonstration does not show that the same hardware can pretrain that model from scratch.

| Path | Starting point | What it can demonstrate |
|---|---|---|
| Scratch training | Randomly initialized weights | How data, tokenization, attention, training loops, and sampling fit together; capability depends on model scale and data. |
| Fine-tuning | Weights from a pretrained model | How continued training adapts an existing model; it is not scratch pretraining. |
A CPU project that is genuinely from scratch
The nanoGPT repository documents a CPU configuration for training a compact, character-level Shakespeare model. Its example sets the device to CPU and uses compile=False, a block size of 64, batch size 12, four layers, four attention heads, embedding dimension 128, and 2,000 iterations. See the nanoGPT README and CPU Shakespeare configuration.
This is a useful educational scale: a small model trained on a narrow text corpus can make the mechanics visible without pretending to reproduce the breadth of a modern foundation model. The listed settings are configuration values, not a promise about how long training will take on your computer.

Why that is not the same as pretraining a large LLM
For context, nanoGPT describes its GPT-2 124M/OpenWebText reproduction as taking about four days on a single node with eight A100 40 GB GPUs. That is the repository’s reported run context, not an independently verified benchmark and not a CPU estimate. It illustrates the scale difference rather than offering a direct comparison of runtimes. See the nanoGPT repository.
The sources do not establish a general CPU-only training time, minimum RAM requirement, or performance estimate for a reader’s hardware. A meaningful estimate would require, at minimum, a specific model, context length, dataset size, CPU, memory, implementation, and training configuration. Without those details, a precise time or hardware recommendation would be guesswork.

Do not mistake a CPU fine-tuning demo for scratch training
The llm.c CPU quick start is explicitly presented as a limited demonstration. Its workflow downloads pretrained GPT-2 small weights and fine-tunes them for 40 steps. It is a CPU example, but it does not train GPT-2 from random initialization.
Choose a path that matches your goal
If your goal is understanding how an LLM works
Start with a compact model and a small dataset. The point is to inspect the full learning process—text preparation, model structure, training, and generated samples—not to compete with a pretrained assistant. A book-length option is Sebastian Raschka’s Build a Large Language Model (From Scratch), published by Manning on October 29, 2024 (ISBN 9781633437166). The publisher’s chapter listing covers text data, attention, GPT implementation, pretraining, and fine-tuning. Raschka describes the project as a small educational model built with Python and PyTorch; the page does not promise a particular CPU runtime.

If your goal is a broadly capable foundation model
The cited CPU examples do not establish that training such a model from scratch on a typical CPU is practical. Large-scale training involves choices about model size, data, and compute that cannot be reduced to a single CPU runtime or memory figure. Google Research’s 2026 ATLAS discussion reports 774 multilingual training runs across 10M–8B parameter models and coverage of more than 400 languages; it also discusses how scratch-training and fine-tuning budgets depend on the model and language setup. Those study figures are not CPU-feasibility results or a universal recommendation. See Google Research’s ATLAS discussion.

Bottom line by project type
- Learn the concepts: CPU-only scratch training of a small educational model is supported by the documented nanoGPT example.
- Adapt an existing GPT-2 checkpoint: the llm.c CPU quick start demonstrates limited fine-tuning, not scratch pretraining.
- Pretrain a capable general-purpose model: the examples here do not support treating a CPU as a practical substitute for the multi-GPU context reported for the cited GPT-2 reproduction.
