Yes, you can usually block a number and unblock it later—but on iPhone and Android, that generally means removing it from a blocked list yourself. Apple and Google’s current instructions do not describe a general timer that automatically unblocks a number after a chosen period. Calls and messages may have separate controls, so check the app you use for each.
Does a blocked number unblock itself?
Not according to the standard iPhone and Google Phone app instructions: they explain how to block and manually unblock a number, but do not document a user-set expiry timer. Treat a block as active until you remove it, unless your carrier explicitly describes a different behavior.

Google Fi documents a specific exception: in some cases, number blocking is temporarily turned off after an emergency call is made from the device. That carrier-specific behavior is not a scheduled timer and should not be assumed to apply to other carriers or plans. Google Fi’s blocking guidance has the details.

iPhone
Apple documents blocking numbers and contacts through its communication apps, and removing a contact from the blocked list to unblock it. Menu labels and routes can vary by iOS release, so use Apple’s maintained instructions for the current route: Block phone numbers, contacts and email addresses on iPhone or iPad. Apple says a blocked person “won’t receive a notification that the call or message was blocked.”

Android with Phone by Google
In Phone by Google, you can block a number from call history and later remove it through Settings > Blocked numbers. Google notes that some steps require Android 6.0 or later. The exact menus may differ on phones using a manufacturer’s dialer. See Google Phone app Help: Block or unblock a phone number.

What exactly does blocking stop?
The result depends on the app and where you block the sender. A Phone app block concerns incoming calls, while Messages may have a separate block list for texts. If you use different apps for calls and messages, check both rather than assuming one setting covers every channel. Apple’s support pages describe controls in Apple communication apps; Google documents separate Phone and Messages guidance.
Blocking an individual number is also different from filtering callers by category. In Phone by Google, the Unknown control blocks private or unidentified callers; it does not mean every number that is not saved in your contacts is blocked. If your goal is to screen a category of callers rather than one person, check what your phone’s specific setting means before turning it on.

Which option fits your situation?
- You want a reversible block on one caller: Block the number in your phone app, then remove it from that app’s blocked list when you want calls to get through again.
- You also want to stop messages: Check the messaging app’s sender-blocking controls as well; they may be separate from call blocking.
- You want a block to expire automatically: The reviewed Apple and Google instructions do not establish a general timed-block feature. Check your carrier’s current support information for network-level controls, and confirm any stated expiry behavior before relying on it.
- You want to stop a group conversation: On iPhone, Apple says a group thread cannot be blocked as a group; leaving it or muting notifications are alternatives. Blocking every participant is not the same as blocking the thread itself.
Before relying on a block
- Confirm whether you blocked the number in the calling app, messaging app, or both.
- Check the blocked list in the relevant app when you want to restore contact; do not expect a standard block to expire by itself.
- If you use a manufacturer’s dialer or carrier service, follow its current instructions. Menus and network-level behavior are not identical across devices and providers.
- For a temporary interruption, consider muting or silencing notifications instead of blocking if you still want the communication to remain available in the app.
