Yes—but only if your PS5 belongs to Sony’s supported CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 model group. You need Sony’s detachable PS5 Disc Drive, and an internet connection is required to pair it with the console during initial setup. Check the model number on your console before buying; “PS5 Digital Edition” alone does not confirm compatibility.
Which PS5 Digital Edition models support a disc drive?
Sony lists its detachable drive as compatible with PS5 consoles in the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups. The name “Digital Edition” is not enough to identify a compatible console: check the model number printed on your PS5 and compare it with Sony’s compatibility and setup instructions before ordering. Do not assume an older Digital Edition supports the add-on.

Which drive do you need?
You need Sony’s detachable PS5 Disc Drive, which attaches to the console. Sony’s compatibility guidance does not identify generic external USB optical drives as substitutes, so do not buy one expecting it to add disc support.

What to know before installing it
- Have an internet connection available for the initial pairing of the drive and console. Sony states: “Internet connection required to pair disc drive and PS5 console upon set up.” This is a setup requirement; Sony’s cited instructions do not say that an attached drive needs a continuing internet connection simply to be used.
- Shut down the console, unplug its cables, and let it cool before attaching the drive. Place it on a soft cloth on a flat surface and follow Sony’s model-specific instructions for removing the cover and short horizontal stand feet.
- Keep the removed cover and short feet. Sony’s instructions identify these parts as needed if you later use the console without the drive attached.
What can you play with the drive installed?
Sony’s PS5 CFI-70XX Quick Start Guide says disc-based games can be played when a separately sold disc drive is installed. That guidance establishes game-disc use; it does not, by itself, establish support for movie playback or other disc formats.
