Start by checking the seller against the brand’s current, country-specific guidance—or buy directly from the brand. A polished listing, a familiar marketplace, or a bargain price cannot prove that a product is genuine. If you cannot establish where it came from, don’t buy it; if it is a beauty product you already received, don’t use it while its authenticity is uncertain.
What to check before buying
Use these checks to assess risk, not to certify a product. Counterfeits can look convincing, and one suspicious detail does not prove an item is fake. The FBI identifies unusually low prices, packaging differences or careless wrapping, unusual cosmetic consistency or texture, and non-authorized online sellers as possible warning signs.

- Seller and channel: Check whether the brand identifies the seller or retailer as official or authorized for your country. A marketplace’s general policies do not establish that an individual seller or listing is approved.
- Price: Compare the offer with the brand’s current price and authorized retailers’ offers. A very low price is a warning sign, not conclusive proof.
- Photos and details: Look for clear, consistent images showing the actual item, packaging, labels, and relevant tags. Generic photos or details that conflict with the brand’s product information merit caution.
- Packaging and product: Differences in packaging, labeling, appearance, or—in cosmetics—texture may indicate a problem. They are not standalone authentication tests.
- Buyer protection: Before paying, understand the platform’s authentication scope, return rules, dispute process, and reporting options. Protection can reduce risk but does not guarantee that every item is genuine.
These general counterfeit indicators come from FBI guidance on counterfeit cosmetics and fragrances; they are not Rhode-, Rare Beauty-, or SKIMS-specific tests.

Rhode says it cannot guarantee the authenticity, quality, or condition of products bought outside its listed channels. Its FAQ lists rhodeskin.com, verified Instagram Shop and TikTok Shop, Sephora in the US, Canada, and UK, and MECCA in Australia and New Zealand. Confirm the current country-specific list on Rhode’s FAQ before purchasing, because retailer availability can change.
#1 Best Overall
For a marketplace listing or resale offer, verify the seller itself—not just the platform name—against Rhode’s current guidance. A listing on a marketplace that prohibits counterfeits is not thereby confirmed as authentic.
What is established for Rare Beauty and SKIMS
The available Rare Beauty Pro Artist terms refer to purchases through official or authorized channels but do not provide a general consumer retailer list. They are not a consumer authentication guide. Check Rare Beauty’s Pro Artist Program Terms & Conditions and the brand’s current official consumer channels; do not treat a reseller’s claim of authorization as confirmation.
The retrieved SKIMS Terms of Service do not establish an authorized-retailer list or counterfeit-detection advice. Use SKIMS’s official site or other channels the brand itself currently identifies, and avoid relying on community guesses or reseller assertions as proof.

Extra checks for resale apparel
Second-hand clothing listings may require different checks from cosmetics. The UK Intellectual Property Office’s guidance, published 27 May 2026, recommends asking for detailed original photos, assessing the seller’s responses, and using platform authentication or buyer protections where available. These steps help you judge risk; they do not certify every listing.
Rank #3
- Ask for original, well-lit photos of the specific item, including labels, tags, seams, and packaging where relevant.
- Review the seller’s history and how clearly and consistently they answer questions.
- Read what the platform’s authentication covers, along with its return and dispute procedures, before buying.
See the UK Intellectual Property Office guide to spotting fake fashion when shopping second-hand. Its guidance is for second-hand fashion and should not be treated as a brand-specific SKIMS authentication protocol.

Amazon prohibits counterfeit products, but that rule does not confirm that a particular seller, listing, or item is genuine. Check the seller and source independently rather than interpreting a platform-wide policy as brand authorization. Amazon describes its policy in its Counterfeit Crimes Unit FAQ.
What to do if you still cannot tell
Do not treat photos, packaging comparisons, or visual inspection as a guarantee. The FBI’s advice is direct: “If you’re not sure about the authenticity of a product, don’t buy it.” If you already have a beauty product of uncertain origin, don’t use it; contact the seller or platform about a return or report, and ask the brand through its official contact channel if it can advise on the item.
