Yes—Windows 11 can run on Proxmox, and a VM configured for your workload may serve as a daily driver. But the published requirements and Proxmox documentation establish how to configure a viable VM, not that it will match bare-metal performance or work with every host and device. The biggest decision is whether virtualized graphics are enough or you need to pass through a dedicated GPU.
What a Windows 11 Proxmox VM needs
Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements allow installation in a virtual machine. Its listed VM minimums are at least two virtual processors, 4 GB of memory, and 64 GB of storage, alongside a host processor that meets Windows 11 processor requirements. The broader hardware requirements include UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable and TPM 2.0. These are minimum requirements, not a recommended allocation for a responsive everyday workstation. Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements distinguish general requirements from host-specific VM security setup; its detailed Secure Boot and virtual TPM directions on that page are for Hyper-V, not a Proxmox recipe.

On the Proxmox side, plan memory for both the host and the guest. Proxmox recommends at least 2 GB for the host operating system and services, with additional memory for virtual machines. It also recommends fast storage; its system guidance recommends SSDs with power-loss protection for good performance and discourages consumer SSDs for its stated production use. That is platform guidance, not a Windows-specific benchmark or a claim that a consumer NVMe drive cannot work. Proxmox VE system requirements provide the host-side context.
Which settings matter most
Meet Windows’ minimums, then size for your workload
Use Microsoft’s figures as a floor: two or more virtual processors, 4 GB of memory, and 64 GB of storage. The sources do not prescribe a larger daily-driver allocation. In practice, the right allocation depends on what you run and how much capacity must remain for Proxmox and other guests; do not treat minimum compliance as evidence of a comfortable experience.

Choose a security configuration that fits Proxmox
Windows 11’s general requirements include UEFI, Secure Boot capability, and TPM 2.0. The precise VM settings depend on the hypervisor. Microsoft’s cited VM-specific instructions describe Hyper-V, so they should not be copied as though they were a Proxmox setup guide. Confirm the Proxmox VM’s firmware and security-device configuration against current Proxmox documentation and the Windows requirements before installation.
Consider GPU passthrough only if virtual graphics are insufficient
For whole-GPU passthrough, Proxmox recommends the q35 machine type, OVMF/UEFI firmware, and PCIe. OVMF requires a UEFI-capable GPU ROM; Proxmox advises using SeaBIOS otherwise. The host CPU and motherboard must support IOMMU, commonly Intel VT-d or AMD-Vi, and IOMMU is normally enabled in firmware. Check the device’s IOMMU group and confirm that the actual GPU, platform, and drivers are suitable before building a setup around passthrough. Proxmox notes that hardware and driver quality affect whether it works. See its PCI(e) passthrough documentation.

Virtual graphics or a passed-through GPU?
| Consideration | Virtualized graphics | Whole-GPU passthrough |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Workloads that meet their graphics needs with virtual display hardware | Workloads or applications that require access to a physical GPU |
| Host requirements | No dedicated GPU passthrough prerequisite is established in the cited guidance | IOMMU-capable CPU and motherboard, firmware support, and a usable IOMMU group |
| GPU availability | Does not dedicate a whole physical GPU to the VM | The passed-through device is controlled by the VM and cannot also be used by the host or another VM |
| Graphical access | Use the VM’s usual virtual-display workflow | Connect a monitor to the card or configure remote desktop inside Windows; Proxmox NoVNC and SPICE cannot show the framebuffer of a whole passed-through GPU |
| Performance evidence | No comparative benchmark is established by the cited sources | Proxmox describes possible lower latency, higher performance, or more features than virtualized hardware, but provides no benchmark proving equivalence to bare metal |
Choose based on the workload, application requirements, host hardware and device isolation, whether the host still needs the GPU, and how you want to access the guest’s display. No particular GPU model or named-GPU ranking is established by the available documentation, so compatibility must be checked for the card and platform you intend to use.
What changes when you pass through a GPU
A whole passed-through device belongs to the VM while assigned; the host or another VM cannot use it at the same time. That can be a major practical constraint if Proxmox itself relies on the same card. Also, the Proxmox web NoVNC and SPICE consoles cannot display a whole passed-through GPU’s framebuffer. For graphics output, Proxmox says to connect a monitor to the card or configure remote desktop software such as VNC or RDP inside the guest.

Can it genuinely replace your daily driver?
It can be a reasonable candidate if the VM meets your applications’ needs, the host has enough resources, and you are comfortable with the chosen graphics and display arrangement. GPU passthrough may enable lower latency, more performance, or additional features compared with virtualized hardware, according to Proxmox, but that is a general capability statement—not a measured comparison with bare metal. The cited sources do not quantify daily-driver adoption or establish that a Windows 11 Proxmox VM matches a physical PC, and they do not guarantee success across hosts.
For readers considering GPU passthrough, a PCIe graphics card is a possible component to investigate, not a universal recommendation: suitability depends on host IOMMU support, device-group isolation, firmware, workload, and display plan. The Proxmox passthrough documentation is the starting point for checking those constraints, not a compatibility list for specific cards.
