Wi-Fi research has demonstrated two different things: detecting and tracking movement through some walls, and matching a person’s movement to a candidate video. Those are not the same as a router identifying someone by name. The reported results come from research prototypes and specific experiments, not a feature established for ordinary home routers.
Can Wi-Fi detect people through walls?
Yes, in research settings, radio signals can partly pass through barriers and reflect from people. When someone moves, the reflected signal changes. A sensing system can analyze those changes to infer that a person is moving and, in some setups, estimate their position or gestures.

MIT’s Wi-Vi prototype used two transmit antennas and one receiver. Its signals were arranged to cancel reflections from static objects, helping isolate reflections that change as a person moves. MIT describes the technique as using MIMO interference nulling and treating human motion as an RF beam. The researchers tested the system in office buildings using USRP software radios. MIT Media Lab’s Wi-Vi project summary and MIT News’ technical explanation describe the prototype.

MIT reported that Wi-Vi could track moving people, estimate their number and relative locations, and recognize simple gestures through walls. These are movement and sensing capabilities. They do not establish that Wi-Vi can determine a person’s name or identify an unknown individual.

What does “identify a person” mean in the separate XModal-ID research?
UCSB’s XModal-ID research tackled a narrower identity-matching task: it compared gait-related features from Wi-Fi measurements with features derived from candidate video footage, then assessed whether the person in that video was the person behind a wall. In other words, the system was not identifying an arbitrary person from a name database; it was checking a match against supplied video.
The project description says the approach uses received signal magnitude from a pair of Wi-Fi transceivers outside the area and a feature-combination network. It says the system does not need prior Wi-Fi/video training data for the target person or prior knowledge of the operating area. It still requires candidate video and a trained network; it is not effortless identification from any standard router. See the UCSB XModal-ID project page.

Reported XModal-ID results
UCSB reports these accuracy results for through-wall candidate-video matching across three areas. The page describes pools of eight people and does not state a publication year for these results.

| Test area | Reported accuracy | Wi-Fi/video pairs | Participant pool |
|---|---|---|---|
| Through-wall area 1 | 83% | 384 | 8 people |
| Through-wall area 2 | 82% | 744 | 8 people |
| Through-wall area 3 | 89% | 360 | 8 people |
UCSB also reports 88% overall accuracy in non-through-wall experiments across two areas, using 768 Wi-Fi/video pairs from eight people. That result concerns a different setting from the through-wall tests.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
These percentages describe particular experiments, not a general benchmark or a promise of performance in other buildings, with larger populations, or under different conditions. They do not show that the system can identify any person without a candidate video. A separate 2021 IEEE Internet of Things Journal abstract reports 92 test experiments for multiple-person gait identification using Wi-Fi magnitude measurements, but the available abstract alone does not establish a directly comparable accuracy figure or broader real-world performance. IEEE paper record.
How do the two capabilities differ?
| Research system | Task demonstrated | Inputs and setup | What the result does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| MIT Wi-Vi | Detecting and tracking movement; estimating count and relative location; simple gesture recognition | Low-power Wi-Fi signal, two transmit antennas and one receiver; built using USRP software radios | Identification of a person by name or matching to a specific identity |
| UCSB XModal-ID | Matching a person behind a wall to a person in candidate video using gait-related features | Wi-Fi magnitude measurements from paired transceivers, candidate video, and a trained feature-combination network | Unrestricted identification from an ordinary router, without comparison footage, or guaranteed accuracy beyond its experiments |
Is this a feature in ordinary home Wi-Fi routers?
The cited work describes research prototypes, not a turnkey consumer feature. MIT says Wi-Vi was built into USRP software radios. UCSB describes paired transceivers and a designed signal-processing pipeline. The sources do not establish that an ordinary home router can reproduce either system’s results, or that a commercial service for identifying people through walls is deployed.

A software-defined radio development kit may be relevant to research prototyping, but that is distinct from buying a router with a supported “see through walls” or identity-recognition feature.
What should readers take from the headline?
Wi-Fi sensing can reveal movement through some walls in controlled research setups. A separate experiment showed candidate-video matching based on gait-related signal features, with accuracy results from small participant pools and specific areas. Neither result means that a typical router can name or reliably identify anyone moving in another room.
