Whiskey droplets can leave web-like patterns as they dry—but the reported 90% brand-identification result is a laboratory finding, not proof that the method can authenticate bottles in the field. The 2020 work suggests an intriguing way to distinguish whiskey samples; it does not establish a consumer-ready counterfeit test.
How does whiskey make a web-like pattern?
In the experiment reported by Chemistry World, microlitre-sized drops were left to evaporate on glass. Neat whiskey dried into a relatively uniform film. When researchers diluted it with water to about 20–30% alcohol content, the residue formed web-like structures.

The proposed explanation begins with hydrophobic compounds in whiskey. Adding water causes them to aggregate into micelles. These aggregates move toward the droplet’s surface and merge into a thin film. As evaporation makes the drop shrink, that film wrinkles and buckles, producing a pattern. Differences in whiskey composition affect the film’s mechanical properties and therefore the resulting motif.

What does the 90% result show?
The team compared patterns from dozens of whiskeys and correctly identified their brands 90% of the time, according to the 2020 Chemistry World report. This supports the narrower conclusion that dried-drop patterns carried information that helped distinguish brands in those comparisons.

It is not a universal accuracy rate, an independently replicated result, or a measured error rate for all whiskey samples. The report does not say the team tested unknown counterfeit bottles. Brand identification among the samples studied and verification that a bottle is genuine are different tasks.
Why is this not yet a bottle-authentication test?
The report presents anti-counterfeiting as a possible future application, not a deployed method. A pattern that varies by whiskey may be useful for screening, but routine authentication would require evidence that the method can separate genuine products from counterfeits reliably under real operating conditions.

That would mean addressing practical questions such as consistent sample preparation, variation between batches, reproducibility across laboratories, and a reference library containing known genuine and counterfeit samples. A system would also need to show that it identifies authenticity rather than merely distinguishing one brand or sample composition from another. The cited report does not establish results for those conditions.

The team expressed interest in further statistical work to understand how flavour chemicals relate to pattern formation. Burak Eral, a hydrodynamics and soft-materials researcher at Delft University of Technology, said, “Complete physical understanding of film and crack formation processes in the presence of different congeners may open extension of the finding beyond American whiskey,” as quoted by Chemistry World.

That possibility is a research direction, not evidence that the method already works across whiskey styles or other spirits. Stuart Williams described the work as “a nice blend between science and art,” noting that whiskey helped capture attention.

The reported demonstration used microlitre droplets and glass surfaces. Glass microscope slides are therefore relevant as a lab-demonstration supply, but the study does not support using household glassware—or a drop of a purchased bottle—to determine whether whiskey is counterfeit.
