A more sustainable approach starts by defining the required fabric hand, appearance and performance, then comparing candidate processes on water, chemicals, energy, emissions, wastewater and residuals while checking that the finished fabric still meets its intended use.
What does fabric finishing involve?
Fabric finishing is an industrial textile stage used to remove unfixed dyes or impart final handle and performance properties. It may follow other wet-processing stages such as pretreatment, dyeing or printing. The European Commission’s textiles industry reference covers these stages across natural and man-made fibers, including blends; finishing is distinct from consumer laundry care and from the upstream production of fibers. The environmental question is not simply whether a process uses less water or fewer chemicals. It is whether the mill can achieve the required fabric result with lower overall impacts, including the energy needed for drying or curing and the pollution and residuals that need treatment or recovery.

Kering Standards v8 calls its list of innovative textile-processing techniques “indicative and non-exhaustive,” and describes it as a starting point for further investigation. It names the following candidate approaches; the source does not establish that they deliver comparable lifecycle savings or identical fabric performance in every application. Kering states that it promotes techniques and technologies enabling waterless or dry processing, resource savings and cleaner production. That is the company’s stated position, not independent proof that a particular option is preferable for a particular fabric. Mills should test the intended route against the target finish and site-specific impacts rather than treating a technology label as a sustainability result.
How can mills reduce water and chemical use?
Review application and chemistry together
Assess whether the desired finish can be achieved with a candidate application method or chemistry while meeting performance requirements. A route described as dry or waterless should not be assumed to eliminate environmental burdens: evaluate its chemical inputs, energy demand, air emissions, wastewater and residuals alongside the fabric result.

Recover and recirculate suitable streams
Kering encourages suppliers to work toward closed-loop water and chemical systems. Its examples include recovery and reuse of chemicals and solvents, reuse of selected water streams, and reverse osmosis after wastewater treatment. Kering says reverse osmosis combined with suitable accessories and management adjustments may enable reuse of “up to 90% of water”; this is a source-stated potential, not a universal or independently verified mill outcome. Kering Standards v8 (2026)
Recirculation needs to be evaluated as part of the facility’s complete water and treatment system: identify which streams are suitable for reuse, what treatment they require, and whether recovered chemicals or water can be used without compromising the process or finished fabric.

Include drying, curing and wastewater treatment
Track energy associated with drying or curing, not only the finishing application itself. Also account for wastewater pollutants and treatment, air emissions, chemical recovery and residuals. A reduction in one input does not by itself show that total process impact has fallen.
How should two finishing options be compared?
Compare options for the same intended fabric use and required result. Record the boundary of the assessment and use a consistent production basis, such as a defined quantity of fabric, so that differences are not hidden by changes in output or quality.

- Specify the target: document the desired hand, appearance and performance, then measure whether each option achieves it.
- Measure resource inputs: record water and chemical use per unit of fabric, including relevant recovery and reuse.
- Measure energy: include the finishing step and associated drying or curing.
- Assess releases and residuals: consider air emissions, wastewater pollutants, treatment needs, residuals and chemical recovery.
- Check operational fit: assess compatibility with the fiber, color, production volume and existing equipment.
- Check evidence and requirements: note how the impacts were measured, the quality of the evidence and the rules that apply to the facility.
The European Commission’s textiles BREF and its associated BAT materials provide industrial context for pretreatment, dyeing, printing and finishing, but the cited sources do not provide an independent, head-to-head dataset ranking the listed technologies across comparable fabric applications. There is therefore no supported universal percentage reduction or single best option to apply across mills. European Commission Joint Research Centre, Textiles Industry

European Union industrial BAT scope
The European Commission Joint Research Centre says the textiles BREF addresses fiber preparation, pretreatment, dyeing, printing and finishing. Its reference information gives a BREF publication date of January 2023 and BAT Conclusions date of December 2022. The EU Publications Office record describes the BAT scope as textile pretreatment or dyeing installations with treatment capacity exceeding 10 tonnes per day under the specified Industrial Emissions Directive category. That threshold is tied to the stated EU category; it is not a worldwide rule for every finishing operation. EU Ecolabel product criteria
The EU Ecolabel textile product group includes clothing, interior textiles, fibers, yarn, fabric and knitted panels. The Commission describes the criteria as promoting more sustainable fiber production, less polluting production, restrictions on hazardous substances and long-lasting final products. The Commission page lists the criteria as valid through 31 December 2028 and notes an ongoing revision. The label can support a product-level claim within its scope; it does not establish that an individual mill or finishing technique has no impact. Local permits and air-emission guidance
Requirements depend on jurisdiction and facility. As one UK example, process guidance note 6/08 is statutory guidance for regulators assessing permit applications for textile and fabric coating and finishing in the specified local authority pollution prevention and control regime. The government page, published 1 June 2014, describes air-emission limits, monitoring methods and best available techniques for controlling air emissions. Because it is jurisdiction-specific and older guidance, operators should check current local requirements and permits rather than treating it as universal or necessarily current compliance advice. Do not confuse mill processes with laundry-product certifications
Green Seal GS-51 covers certain industrial and institutional laundry-care products, including fabric starch, sizing and finish products and certain softeners. Its scope explicitly excludes laundry facilities and the equipment or processes used there, so a product certification under this standard is not evidence that a mill-scale manufacturing process is greener. Green Seal identifies Edition 1.8, issued 23 June 2022, with corrections or clarifications last made 3 April 2026. Green Seal, GS-51 Laundry Care Products for Industrial and Institutional Use
What should a mill ask before changing a finish?
- What fabric performance must remain unchanged, and how will it be measured?
- What are the water, chemical and energy inputs per unit of acceptable finished fabric?
- Are drying and curing included in the energy comparison?
- What emissions, wastewater pollutants and residuals result, and how are they managed?
- Which water or chemical streams can actually be recovered and reused at this facility?
- Will the route work with the fiber, color, throughput and equipment in use?
- Does the evidence compare equivalent products and disclose its boundary and measurement method?
- Which current permits, BAT requirements or local rules apply to this site?
A greener finishing decision is therefore a facility-specific process choice supported by measured fabric performance and a transparent account of inputs and releases. The available guidance identifies routes and assessment dimensions, but does not establish a single winning technology for all fibers, finishes, mills or regions.
