Can We Predict Which Jobs Robots Will Do?

Automation estimates can flag tasks and occupations that may change, but exposure is not a job-loss forecast. Here’s how to read robot-and-work predictions.

We can estimate which tasks and occupations are exposed to automation, and report what employers expect. But those estimates cannot reliably tell us which jobs robots will eliminate. A robot’s ability to perform a task is only the starting point: adoption costs, regulation, workplace decisions, demand and workers’ ability to adapt all shape what happens next.

What researchers can predict—and what they cannot

Forecasts often blur four different questions: Can a technology perform a task? Which tasks in an occupation might be affected? Will employers adopt the technology and change staffing? What happens to employment after those changes? Each question needs a different kind of evidence.

  • Task capability or exposure: estimates whether technology could perform or assist with some tasks.
  • Adoption: assesses whether organizations are likely to use it, given costs, regulation and practical constraints.
  • Expected job change: records what surveyed employers think may happen over a stated period.
  • Observed outcomes: measures employment, wages and worker transitions after changes occur.

An exposure estimate is not a forecast of job losses. The International Labour Organization’s April 2026 brief describes exposure indicators as signals of possible change, not predictions of employment outcomes. Such measures can miss adoption barriers and economic or institutional conditions; they may also miss how productivity gains affect demand. The ILO recommends considering exposure alongside observed employment, wages and worker transitions. Read the ILO brief.

Why forecasts start with tasks, not job titles

A job is a bundle of tasks. A technology may automate or assist with some of them while other tasks still depend on human judgment, interaction or work that the technology cannot perform. If a few tasks change, the occupation may be redesigned rather than removed.

The ILO and Poland’s NASK research illustrates this task-based approach for generative AI, not physical robots. Its 2025 global index uses task-level inputs, expert validation and AI-assisted scoring to assess potential exposure across occupations. The authors conclude that transformation is more likely than outright replacement for most occupations. See the ILO/NASK analysis and its methodology.

The distinction matters when applying findings to robotics. A generative-AI estimate cannot be treated as a measure of which jobs industrial or service robots will replace. The OECD’s 2026 AI exposure measure maps capabilities across domains, including robotics, machine vision and embodied AI, but it too describes capability gaps—not certain employment outcomes. Adoption, regulation, organizational change and social choices still matter. See the OECD measure.

What the published numbers actually say

The figures below concern different technologies and outcomes. They are not interchangeable predictions of jobs robots will take.

Figure What it measures What it does not mean
One in four workers globally ILO, 2025: workers in occupations with some degree of generative-AI exposure. ILO/NASK analysis. One in four workers will lose a job, or face exposure to physical robots.
3.3% of global employment ILO, 2025: employment in its highest generative-AI exposure category. ILO figures and categories. A robotics displacement estimate or a forecast that this share of jobs will disappear.
5 million net jobs projected as displaced by 2030 World Economic Forum, 2025: employer expectations for robotics and autonomous systems in its covered role dataset. WEF Future of Jobs Report 2025. Observed job losses, a validated predictive model, or a universal forecast covering every job.
22% of today’s total formal jobs WEF, 2025: combined job creation and displacement estimate due to macrotrends by 2030. WEF Future of Jobs Report 2025. A robotics-only estimate.
8 percentage points OECD, 2024: increase in the share of vacancies in highly AI-exposed occupations requesting at least one emotional, cognitive or digital skill. OECD analysis. A measure of jobs robots will replace; it concerns skills requested in AI-exposed occupations.

The WEF survey also identifies robotics and autonomous systems as growth drivers for several fast-growing roles. Its displacement figure should therefore be read as an employer outlook for a defined set of roles, not as proof that robotics only destroys work. See the WEF report.

Why a capability can take years—or never—to change staffing

Technical feasibility does not guarantee adoption. Employers weigh equipment and integration costs, expected productivity, worker availability, safety and regulation. Even after adoption, the effect on headcount depends on how the workplace is reorganized and whether lower costs or faster output increase demand for the service or product.

These forces can pull in opposite directions: automation can reduce the labor needed for particular tasks, while productivity gains and new demand can create or expand other work. Training and organizational choices influence who can move into changed or newly created roles. A national net figure can obscure losses concentrated in particular places and gains elsewhere.

Historical evidence is a useful caution, not a guarantee about future robots. The OECD found that historical automation risk did not, on average, correspond to overall employment reductions across the regions it analyzed. Some regions did experience job losses, and newly created work did not necessarily benefit the people displaced. Read the OECD regional analysis.

How to judge a forecast about robots and jobs

Before relying on a prediction, check what it is actually measuring. A forecast is much more informative when its scope and method are explicit.

  • Technology: Does it cover industrial robots, service robots, broader automation or generative AI? Do not transfer a GenAI estimate to physical robotics.
  • Outcome: Is it about technical capability, task exposure, likely adoption, changed skill demand, expected job growth or decline, or observed employment?
  • Unit: Does it count tasks, occupations, vacancies, employers, workers, regions or total employment?
  • Time and place: Note the publication date, forecast horizon, geography and labor-market context.
  • Method and coverage: Is it based on task scoring, expert review, AI-assisted estimates, an employer survey or observed labor-market data? Check which occupations, employers or roles were included.
  • Adjustment and distribution: Does it account for costs, demand, productivity, regulation, workplace redesign and training—and whether gains reach the workers and regions that bear losses?

Each method can be useful, but they answer different questions. The ILO’s Paweł Gmyrek described why exposure measures can provide an early signal: “Employment statistics usually react slowly, while exposure – measured through the automation potential of tasks across occupations – gives us a clearer sense of the transformations likely to occur in the mid-term.” His comment concerned the ILO/NASK occupational exposure research, not a robot-specific forecast. Read the ILO interview.

What workers, employers and policymakers can monitor

Because no exposure score settles what will happen to a job, monitor changes that show whether capability is becoming real-world adoption and how its effects are distributed.

Quick Recap

  • Workers: Track which tasks in your occupation are changing, what skills employers request, and whether training or internal transitions are available.
  • Employers: Assess task-level effects and workplace redesign alongside productivity, staffing, safety and the distribution of transition costs and benefits.
  • Policymakers and researchers: Compare adoption evidence with employment, wages, vacancies and worker transitions, while looking for regional concentration and access to training.
