Yes, visiting a website can lead to malware infection without a download click if malicious page content exploits a vulnerability in your browser or related software. But many website-related infections begin when a visitor is tricked into downloading or running a fake update or other harmful file. The two routes are different, and neither means every visit to an unfamiliar site—or even a compromised site—will infect a device.
How can a website install malware?
A website can expose a device to attacker-controlled content in several ways. The site itself may be malicious, a legitimate site may have been compromised, or an advertisement or embedded element may carry harmful code. MITRE ATT&CK describes a drive-by compromise as an attack that can begin when someone visits a website while browsing normally. MITRE ATT&CK: T1189 Drive-by Compromise

The page may use scripts to check for vulnerable browser or plugin software, then deliver exploit code aimed at a weakness it finds. If the exploit succeeds, it may let an attacker run code on the device. Exploit kits can bundle checks and exploits for different vulnerabilities. A successful attack may then fetch additional malware; Microsoft describes a downloader as malware that retrieves other files over the internet, while a dropper installs files already embedded in it. Some attacks may require active scripting, another component to be enabled, or a visitor to dismiss a warning. In some cases, exploit delivery may occur on a later visit rather than the first page load. MITRE ATT&CK: T1189 Drive-by Compromise

Can you get malware just by visiting, or must you click?
| Route | What has to happen | Does it require a download click? | Most relevant protection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exploit-driven compromise | A relevant software vulnerability must be present and the exploit must succeed. | Not necessarily; a successful exploit can run through page content. | Keep the browser and related software updated; use browser protections. |
| Deceptive installation | A misleading prompt persuades someone to download, install, or run a malicious file. | Usually the person must accept or run something. | Reject unexpected prompts and obtain apps or updates from the official publisher or store. |
Microsoft describes both infection through vulnerabilities on malicious or compromised sites and cases where a person is tricked into downloading and installing malware. Microsoft Support: How malware can infect your PC Microsoft Learn: Prevent malware infection
So, “I only visited the page” and “I downloaded a file” are not the same account of what happened. Visiting alone can be enough if an exploit applies and succeeds; a fake update or warning is a separate social-engineering route. The available guidance does not quantify the odds of either route on a fully updated device, so a precise infection probability would be misleading.

Why a familiar or legitimate website can still be involved
A well-known site is not proof that every element it loads is safe. Attackers may inject scripts into a compromised site, alter scripts served from cloud storage, use malicious advertising, or abuse user-controlled content such as uploads or comments. MITRE ATT&CK and Microsoft both describe compromised websites and malicious content as possible delivery channels. This does not mean that ordinary visits to legitimate sites routinely infect devices. The cited sources explain possible mechanisms and protections, but do not establish a current infection rate or compare risk among browsers, operating systems, or devices.

How to reduce the risk
- Install browser and software updates. Updates can address vulnerabilities that exploit code might target. Remove software and browser extensions you no longer use, since unnecessary components add things to maintain and secure. Microsoft Support: How malware can infect your PC
- Use browser protections and current security software. The FTC recommends keeping security software updated and enabling automatic scanning of new files. These measures reduce risk; they cannot guarantee that every threat will be blocked. FTC: Malware: How To Protect Against, Detect, and Remove It
- Use a non-administrator account for everyday activity. Limiting account privileges can make it harder for malware to make consequential system changes, though it does not make exploitation impossible. Microsoft Learn: Prevent malware infection
- Do not install software from an unexpected web prompt. Be cautious with misspelled domains, aggressive pop-ups, misleading buttons, and offers tied to pirated media or software. If you need an app or update, go to the official publisher or app store yourself rather than following an unsolicited prompt. What to do if a visit may have led to malware
- Stop signing in to sensitive accounts on the possibly affected device. This is especially important if you suspect credentials or account access may have been exposed. FTC: Malware: How To Protect Against, Detect, and Remove It
- Update your security software and run a scan. Follow the security software’s instructions for handling anything it detects. FTC: Malware: How To Protect Against, Detect, and Remove It
- Protect potentially exposed accounts. Change passwords and enable two-factor authentication if account access may have been compromised. FTC: Malware: How To Protect Against, Detect, and Remove It
Unexpected redirects, new browser toolbars, excessive pop-ups, slowdowns, repeated system errors, or disabled system tools can be warning signs. They are not proof of malware by themselves, and malware may not show obvious symptoms. FTC: Malware: How To Protect Against, Detect, and Remove It
