Yes, in an individual case—but 50% is not a dependable prediction for every site. A Google/YouTube case study reported field Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) improving from 4.6 seconds to 2.0 seconds after changes that included moving player HTML earlier and improving poster-image delivery. Those changes affected both video presentation and page structure, so they do not show that video encoding alone halves load time. The practical first step is to identify what the browser is waiting for, then optimize that bottleneck and check the result with comparable measurements.
What does “50% faster” mean?
Page-load time can refer to different outcomes, including when the main content appears, when a page becomes interactive, or when all resources finish loading. LCP measures how long it takes the largest eligible content element in the viewport to render. It is useful for assessing perceived loading, but it is not a synonym for every page-load metric.

Google’s web.dev guidance considers an LCP of 2.5 seconds or less good at the 75th percentile, with mobile and desktop assessed separately. A video-related change can improve LCP only when it affects the LCP element or the time it takes that element to appear. If a video is below the fold, or another element is the LCP, shrinking the video may not change LCP at all. See web.dev’s LCP guidance.
Find out whether video is the bottleneck
Start with a performance trace or field data for the page you want to improve. Identify the LCP element, then examine the four parts of its timing: time to first byte (TTFB), resource load delay, resource load duration, and element render delay. These distinguish a slow server response from a late resource request, a long download, or delayed rendering.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Record the video’s position and behavior too: whether it is the LCP candidate, whether it is above the fold, whether it is a direct video file or a third-party embed, and what the browser requests before playback. Compare before-and-after results under equivalent conditions and for the same audience and device segments. Also check playback start time and stalls: a page can render sooner while the video takes longer to start.
Choose the fix for the kind of video
Click-to-play video
If visitors start playback themselves, consider <video preload="none" poster="/media/preview.jpg" controls>. The poster provides a visible preview while preload="none" can avoid downloading video contents in advance. The preload value is a hint rather than a guarantee, so inspect actual network requests in the browsers and devices important to your audience.

A poster can itself become the LCP resource. Prioritize its delivery only when it is the LCP image; otherwise, an aggressively loaded poster may compete for bandwidth with the actual LCP content. The poster also costs an image request, while leaving it out may show a blank frame before video appears.

Video below the fold
For media that is not needed in the initial viewport, native loading="lazy" can defer poster and metadata requests until the video nears the viewport in supported browsers. Pair it with an appropriate preload value, then check the request waterfall to confirm what the target browsers actually defer. Do not lazy-load a video that is the page’s LCP element; delaying its request can make the primary content appear later. web.dev’s lazy-loading guide was updated July 2, 2026.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Third-party video embeds
An embed can load player JavaScript and other resources in addition to the video itself. One compromise is to show a lightweight placeholder and load the player only after a visitor interacts with it. That reduces work during initial loading but means the player arrives later, so measure both page rendering and interaction-to-play experience. A hosting service may manage video delivery, but using one does not by itself guarantee a faster page.
Autoplay and looping video
Autoplayed media may begin downloading immediately, even when it is outside the first viewport; the exact behavior depends on the markup and browser. Use autoplay only when it serves the page’s purpose, and check whether it triggers early network activity. Video can replace an animated GIF for similar visuals, but compressing and deferring it appropriately still matters.

Video file size and encoding
Encoding can reduce transfer size and may help startup or reduce stalls, but compare visual quality and browser compatibility rather than choosing by file size alone. web.dev gives example sizes for one two-minute video: VP8, 5.5 MB; VP9, 4.2 MB; H.265, 5.4 MB; and H.264, 16.1 MB. These are sizes for that example, not typical results or a universal codec ranking. Test the formats and quality settings against your source video, audience devices, startup time, and playback behavior. Read the video-format example.

In a Google/YouTube case study reported by web.dev, field LCP improved from 4.6 seconds to 2.0 seconds after work that included moving player HTML above the interactivity script and optimizing poster-image delivery. This is a site-specific result involving video presentation and page structure, not a controlled estimate of what video optimization will achieve elsewhere. It does not isolate the effect of re-encoding the video. Read the Google/YouTube case study.

The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: video-related changes can produce a reduction of that scale in some circumstances, but there is no general expected percentage to apply to other websites. Your result depends on whether video or its surrounding player resources are actually delaying the metric you care about.
How to verify an improvement
- Capture a baseline. Record LCP and its four phases, the LCP element, video requests, and playback behavior for the relevant page.
- Change one relevant cause at a time. For example, defer a below-the-fold video, change click-to-play preloading, optimize an LCP poster, or reduce the player’s early resource work.
- Repeat comparable measurements. Keep the page, test conditions, and device segments consistent. For field results, compare the same population and segment mobile and desktop separately.
- Check the user experience as well as loading. Confirm that the video remains usable, playback starts acceptably, and stalls or visual quality have not worsened.
- Keep only changes that improve the intended outcome. A smaller media file is not proof of better LCP if another phase or element controls when the page’s main content appears.

For a rendered screenshot of a page before and after a change, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its clean-shot options accept cookie banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include verdict and billing headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients. Screenshots are useful for visual checks, but they do not replace performance traces or field LCP data.
