Vanilla has not been shown to heal wounds in people. The research behind this idea is about vanillin—a compound associated with vanilla—tested in laboratory cells and experimental wound materials, not kitchen vanilla or a proven treatment. Those studies offer a research lead, not a reason to put vanilla extract or vanillin powder on an injury.
What the studies tested
Vanilla is a flavoring and plant-derived product; vanillin is one of its characteristic compounds. The studies discussed here tested purified vanillin or experimental materials containing it. That distinction matters: results from a controlled formulation cannot be assumed to apply to vanilla beans, extract, or food-grade vanillin.

A 2023 cell study
Zaid and colleagues studied cultured human keratinocytes and dermal fibroblasts, two cell types involved in skin. In their laboratory experiments, cells exposed to vanillin at 10–500 μM had more than 80% survival. The researchers also used hydrogen peroxide to induce oxidative stress and a scratch assay to examine how cells migrated into a gap. A scratch assay is a cell-culture model; it does not measure how quickly an injury heals in a person, or whether a treatment prevents infection or scarring. The authors suggested the findings might inform future wound dressings or other wound-healing applications, not that a validated product exists. Read the 2023 study.
Experimental materials and animal observations
A 2021 review describes research on chitosan-vanillin materials and rat-skin observations, including angiogenic stimulus, collagen deposition, re-epithelialization, and changes in inflammatory markers. These are preclinical findings involving a formulated material and animals, not ordinary vanilla applied to a human wound. The review notes that the findings had not been replicated in humans and that clinical trials were needed. Read the 2021 review.

A 2025 diabetic-wound cell model
A 2025 study examined vanillin and photobiomodulation in diabetic wounded fibroblast cells. In that cell model, 6 μg/mL vanillin combined with photobiomodulation was reported to have the best effect among the tested conditions. This is not evidence that vanillin or light therapy heals diabetic ulcers in patients, and it is not a treatment instruction. Read the 2025 study.
What later reviews say
A 2026 review surveys proposed oxidative-stress, immune, antimicrobial, and biomaterial roles for vanillin in chronic-wound research. Its authors say standardized evaluation and further mechanistic and translational studies are still needed before clinical use. They write: “Addressing these gaps is essential to define structure–function relationships, validate safety and efficacy, and advance clinical translation.” Read the 2026 review.

- Cell findings: Vanillin affected cell survival and migration-related measures in laboratory models. These results can help researchers decide what to investigate next, but are not patient outcomes.
- Animal and material findings: Experimental vanillin-containing materials have been studied preclinically. Their effects do not show that vanilla itself works as a wound treatment.
- Human benefit: The studies summarized here do not establish that eating vanilla, applying vanilla extract, or using vanillin powder heals wounds in people. No human wound-healing efficacy figure is established by this evidence.
To judge any future claim, look for human studies of the actual formulation and route being proposed, for the relevant type of wound, with meaningful healing and safety outcomes. A result in cells, or in an animal using a specialized material, cannot supply those answers on its own.

Should you use vanilla on a wound?
No. The evidence does not support vanilla extract, vanilla beans, or food-grade vanillin powder as wound care. The experimental compound and biomaterials in these studies are not interchangeable with kitchen products, and the studies do not establish a consumer vanilla-based wound treatment. For an injury that is deep, worsening, infected, or slow to heal—or for a wound in someone with diabetes—seek appropriate medical advice rather than trying an unproven kitchen remedy.
