Yes, in a limited sense: Steam Frame can show a monochrome passthrough view in darkness, giving it a night-vision-like effect. Valve lists built-in infrared illuminators for low-light tracking and passthrough, and Valve engineer Jeremy Selan described the result as “sort of a night vision view.” That is a description of a VR headset’s passthrough—not evidence that it performs like dedicated night-vision equipment.
Why Steam Frame can show a view in the dark
Steam Frame has four outward-facing monochrome cameras for tracking and monochrome passthrough, according to Valve’s Steam Frame specifications. The same specifications list infrared illuminators for low-light tracking and passthrough. In other words, the headset has built-in illumination to support the camera-based view when visible light is scarce.

PC Gamer reported on November 12, 2025, that Valve engineer Jeremy Selan said: “You can even use the passthrough in complete darkness and you sort of get a night vision view.” The phrasing matters: this is a qualitative description of passthrough, not a formal performance specification.
What “night-vision-like” does—and doesn’t—mean
The comparison describes how the headset can present a view in dark surroundings. The available specifications and interview report do not establish a viewing range, image resolution in darkness, illumination rating, or performance comparable to dedicated night-vision equipment. Steam Frame is a VR headset, not a device identified as dedicated night-vision gear.

Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes Steam Frame as designed primarily for low-latency PC streaming, while also supporting standalone VR and non-VR use: Steamworks: Steam Frame. Its low-light passthrough is one feature of that headset, rather than evidence of a separate night-vision operating mode.
Is the color-passthrough accessory required?
No. Valve lists the Arcturus Vision Camera as an optional compatible accessory for 5K HDR color passthrough and spatial video capture. The official specifications do not present it as necessary for the built-in monochrome low-light passthrough.
