The widely reported 4K/60fps result came from RPCS3 running under Linux on a base PS5, and it was for one game, Ridge Racer 7. It does not demonstrate that a PS5 Pro ran the test or that PS3 games generally run at 4K and 60fps on either console.
What the reported PS5 test actually demonstrated
Coverage of Digital Foundry testing describes a base PlayStation 5 booted into Linux, with the RPCS3 PlayStation 3 emulator running as a native Linux application. The reported setup used the RADV graphics driver, not Proton translation, and placed Linux on an SSD installed in the console’s M.2 slot. Digital Citizen’s May 25, 2026 summary describes the arrangement and results.

The headline result applies narrowly to Ridge Racer 7: it was reported at 4K and 60fps, with minimal stuttering in Notebookcheck’s account. That is a game-specific observation, not a performance guarantee for the PS3 catalog. Notebookcheck’s May 25, 2026 coverage and Push Square’s May 24, 2026 report summarize the tests.
How different PS3 games performed
The reported results show why resolution alone is a poor measure of whether a game is running well. The observations below are attributed to coverage of Digital Foundry’s tests; they are not independent tests or promises for other firmware, emulator versions, or consoles.

| Game | Reported result | What to make of it |
|---|---|---|
| Ridge Racer 7 | 4K at 60fps; minimal stuttering in Notebookcheck’s account | The source of the prominent 4K/60fps result; it does not represent every PS3 game. |
| Resistance: Fall of Man | 4K output, generally around 30fps | Coverage also noted frame-pacing issues, so the output resolution does not mean a consistently smooth 60fps. |
| Heavenly Sword | Near 30fps at 5120×2880 (2880p) | Very high output resolution did not translate into 60fps. |
| GTA IV | Around 17fps at 720p in TweakTown’s account | A reported example of a title limited by CPU-side emulation demands. |
| Metal Gear Solid 4 | Reported to struggle | Coverage points to the demands of CPU emulation; no specific resolution or frame rate is established here. |
| Killzone 3 | Around 4K/30fps, with drops in some scenes | Results improved after disabling MLAA through RPCS3 patches; that change is part of the reported test context. |
| MotorStorm: Pacific Rift | Reported at 4K/30fps | High-resolution output, but not 60fps. |
The game-specific figures and caveats are also summarized in TweakTown’s May 2026 report. Frame pacing, scene-to-scene drops, and whether a patch or effect change was needed matter alongside resolution and average frame rate.
Why a faster-looking image does not mean every game reaches 60fps
RPCS3 has to reproduce work that PS3 games performed on the Cell processor, including its Synergistic Processing Units (SPUs). Games that depend heavily on that work can hit the PS5’s CPU-side emulation limits even when the GPU can produce a high-resolution image. Upscaling or raising output resolution does not remove that bottleneck.
This is why the reported outcomes range from Ridge Racer 7 at 4K/60fps to GTA IV at roughly 17fps at 720p, and why other games can show high-resolution output while remaining near 30fps or experiencing pacing problems. TweakTown and Push Square describe the CPU/SPU emulation constraint.
Why this is not a PS5 Pro feature
The published test accounts identify the hardware as a base PS5; they do not show a PS5 Pro running Linux and RPCS3. That leaves the specific claim that a PS5 Pro ran PS3 games at 4K/60fps unverified. The available evidence also does not prove that the Pro could never run such a setup; it simply does not establish that it has.
In either case, this is an enthusiast Linux-and-emulation experiment, not Sony’s official PS3 backward-compatibility feature. It depends on booting an exploitable console into Linux and running a separate emulator rather than launching a PS3 game through the standard PS5 system software.
Linux boot and firmware support are significant limitations
Tom’s Hardware reported on April 29, 2026, that the public ps5-linux project supported original PS5 “Phat” units on firmware 3.00 through 4.51 at that time. Initial code execution required a separate umtx2 exploit. The report said firmware 5.xx might have reduced-performance limitations and that firmware 6.xx or later was ruled out for that project at publication. These are dated project-support statements, not guarantees of ongoing compatibility, and the report does not establish PS5 Pro support. See Tom’s Hardware’s April 29, 2026 report.
The boot process is described as a soft mod: the exploit has to be run again to boot Linux, while a standard reboot returns the console to normal PS5 operation. It can involve local tools and display-compatibility troubleshooting, so it is not a supported menu setting or a straightforward way to add PS3 compatibility.

What the M.2 SSD did—and did not do
The reported arrangement used an SSD in the PS5 M.2 slot to hold Linux. That makes an M.2 NVMe SSD relevant to this particular kind of setup, but the coverage does not identify a tested or endorsed SSD model. Storage alone does not enable a jailbreak, bypass firmware restrictions, improve RPCS3’s CPU emulation, or guarantee that a console can run the setup.
