In Tom’s Guide’s reported three-minute shower test, the Outdoor Research Foray 3L kept almost all water out. The tester found one small wet spot on his shirt, where water came through the gap between the hood and chin. That is a promising result for this particular test—not proof of protection in every storm or a standardized waterproof rating.
What happened in the shower test?
Tom’s Guide writer Dan Bracaglia wore the Foray 3L under a shower for three minutes, moving so water reached different areas of the jacket. Afterward, he unzipped it and checked the white T-shirt underneath. He reported almost no moisture, except for a small wet spot on his chest caused by water entering at the hood-and-chin gap. The result highlights both the shell’s performance in that test and the importance of how the jacket closes around the face.

What is the Foray 3L built to do?
The tested garment is the Outdoor Research Foray 3L, not the lighter Helium jacket or a generic Outdoor Research shell. Outdoor Research describes the men’s Foray 3L as a three-layer AscentShell Dry jacket made with 100% recycled nylon and mechanical stretch. Its listed features include a Nikwax Direct.Dry durable water-repellent finish, fully taped seams, YKK Aquaguard zippers, an adjustable hood, and TorsoFlo venting. The test article notes that the long side vents open broadly and do not have mesh. That design provides a way to release heat, but open vents are also areas to consider when choosing a shell for conditions where keeping rain out matters more than ventilation.
How does it compare with the REI Rainier?
Tom’s Guide says both the Foray 3L and the $100 REI Rainier passed its shower test. The article attributes the Foray’s higher cost to its thicker build, fewer seams, water-resistant zippers, and stretchier, more breathable design. These are the article’s reported observations, not the outcome of a controlled head-to-head test.

Is the Foray 3L worth considering?
The shower result is encouraging if you want a substantial, stretchy shell with taped seams, water-resistant zippers, and ventilation options. The small leak also makes the hood-and-chin fit worth checking: adjust the hood and closure for your face, and assess whether they stay in place as you move. The article’s result cannot tell you how the jacket will fit or perform on you.
