With Tailscale, remote devices join an authenticated private network; a subnet router can then provide access to selected home-network devices that cannot run the client themselves. This reduces one kind of public exposure—it does not make every device or account on your network secure.
How remote access without port forwarding works
A port-forwarding rule on a home router sends incoming traffic on a public-facing port to a service inside your network. A mesh VPN takes a different approach: enrolled devices connect to a private overlay, and access is governed by the VPN network’s identity and policy settings.

If the device you want to reach can run the VPN client, install it there and on the remote device. Tailscale recommends this direct-client approach when possible; it avoids relying on a gateway to bridge traffic to the device. For equipment that cannot run a client—such as some printers or cameras—a computer on the home LAN can act as a subnet router and advertise the relevant private route. Authorized remote devices can then reach destinations on that route without a service-specific inbound port mapping on the home router. Tailscale’s subnet-router documentation describes route advertisement and the Linux requirements.

An exit node is not required just to reach a printer, camera, or other LAN destination. Tailscale says exit-node use is opt-in; local network access is disabled by default while using one unless the user enables it. See its exit-node documentation for details. Do not assume that joining a mesh VPN sends ordinary web browsing through your home connection.

What you need to configure
The exact controls depend on the operating system and VPN product. In Tailscale’s Linux instructions, the subnet-router host must have IP forwarding enabled. The route must also be advertised and approved or enabled in the administration interface, and access rules must allow the intended users or devices to reach the destinations. Tailscale cautions that Linux firewall forwarding should be denied by default unless it is deliberately permitted. Use the current setup instructions for the host platform rather than applying Linux commands to another operating system.
- Choose the destination. Decide which device or private subnet needs remote access. Prefer installing the VPN client on the destination when it supports one.
- Choose an always-on host if needed. For a device that cannot run the client, use a computer on the home LAN as a subnet router. It must remain powered on and connected for that route to work.
- Advertise only the required route. Configure the subnet router to offer the destination route, then approve or enable it in the VPN administration interface.
- Limit who can connect. Set access policies for the users or devices that need the route, and avoid granting access to unrelated systems.
- Test from outside the home network. Connect an enrolled remote device and confirm that it can reach only the intended destinations. If it cannot, check that the host is online, the route is approved, forwarding and firewall rules are configured as intended, and the policy permits the connection.

Does this make a home network secure?
It can reduce exposure from the specific inbound port mappings this setup replaces, while letting you control access through the VPN network’s policies. That is a narrower and more accurate security claim than saying the whole home network is secure. A VPN does not patch vulnerable applications, protect a weakly secured account, or make an overbroad route safe.
Keep the VPN host and destination devices updated, use strong account authentication, and grant access only to the people and devices that need it. The host itself becomes part of the access path, so its availability and maintenance matter. The cited Tailscale guidance explains product configuration; it is not an independent audit or a guarantee that every port-forwarding setup is unsafe.

Do you need a Raspberry Pi?
No. A compatible computer already running the VPN client may serve as the always-on subnet-router host. A small dedicated computer can be useful if you want a host that stays on, but it adds hardware and another device to maintain; it is not a requirement for remote access. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation covers headless setup, network access, and boot media. Tailscale also documents a PiKVM remote-access integration and Raspberry Pi examples in its solutions documentation.

- One device supports the VPN client: Install the client on that device and on the remote device; this avoids routing through a home subnet gateway.
- Several LAN devices cannot run a client: Use a subnet router, advertise only the needed routes, and set narrow access policies.
- You want all remote internet traffic to leave through home: Consider an exit node, understanding that this is a different routing choice from reaching a LAN device.
