Ordinary heaters are not established as a general cause of Wi-Fi radio interference. If your connection weakens near a heater, the cause may instead be an obstacle in the signal path, poor coverage, another electronic device, or heat affecting the router itself. Test one factor at a time before buying equipment.
How a heater could affect Wi-Fi indirectly
Obstacles can weaken the signal
Wi-Fi signals can be weakened by objects and building materials between the router and a connected device. Metal is a particularly substantial obstacle; Apple rates it as having “Very high interference potential” in its wireless interference guidance. Water can also matter: Linksys notes that water heaters may affect signal strength because Wi-Fi does not pass well through water (Linksys support).

That makes a metal-bodied heater, a water-filled radiator, or a heating system positioned across the signal path a plausible obstruction. It does not show that the heater’s heating element is emitting radio interference.
Excessive heat can affect networking equipment
A router placed too close to a heat source may operate outside the conditions its manufacturer specifies. For example, Google says to keep Nest Wifi devices away from heat sources. Its Nest Wifi Pro documentation gives an ambient operating range of 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F) and warns that excessive internal temperature can reduce performance and connectivity or cause the device to shut down. Those limits apply to the named product family, not to every router (Google Nest Wifi safety and regulatory guide).

Other radio activity or weak coverage may be responsible
Wi-Fi can be affected by nearby devices that use the same frequency bands or generate radio-frequency noise. Google lists cordless phones, Bluetooth devices, baby monitors, wireless cameras, security systems, and microwave ovens among potential sources. Its wireless interference troubleshooting guide does not identify ordinary space heaters as a typical direct source.
A device may also lose Wi-Fi near a heater simply because that room is far from the router or separated by walls. Netatmo’s guidance for a thermostat with no Wi-Fi near the heater suggests moving its relay closer to the router, changing the thermostat installation arrangement, or adding a repeater (Netatmo support).

How to check what is causing the connection problem
- Compare with the heater off, if safe and practical. Check the connection with the heater on and temporarily off under otherwise similar conditions. A change that coincides with switching the heater does not prove the heater caused it; repeat the comparison and consider other changing conditions.
- Move the router and connected device. Retest after moving your phone, computer, thermostat relay, or other client a short distance. Keep the router away from direct heat and give it open space for ventilation.
- Inspect the path between the router and the device. Look for the heater, a water-filled radiator, metal, a mirror, a cabinet, or a dense wall in the way. Try a position with fewer obstacles.
- Test other electronics one at a time. Check nearby cordless phones, Bluetooth devices, baby monitors, microwaves, and other electronics. Google recommends moving, unplugging, or disabling suspected devices individually, then testing the connection.
- Compare Wi-Fi bands and channels if your equipment allows it. Try 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, or use automatic channel selection or a less congested channel. Available settings depend on the router and client; Apple describes band and channel choices as possible ways to manage interference (Apple wireless interference guidance).
Choose a fix that matches the problem
| What you find | What to try |
|---|---|
| The router is close to the heater or feels poorly ventilated | Move it away from direct heat, provide open space, and follow the temperature guidance for that exact router model. |
| Metal, water, or a dense wall blocks the route | Reposition the router or client to reduce obstacles. If that is not practical, consider a wired access point or a powerline-based option paired with an access point. |
| Only the heater room has weak coverage | Consider a compatible Wi-Fi repeater or range extender, placed where it can still receive a strong signal from the router. Google explains that extenders rebroadcast the router’s signal, while Netatmo lists a repeater as one option for weak Wi-Fi near a heater (Google troubleshooting; Netatmo support). |
| A particular electronic device appears to disrupt the connection | Keep it farther from the router or client if possible, and use band or channel settings supported by your equipment. |
An extender addresses weak coverage; it will not correct an overheated router or remove every source of radio interference. Check compatibility with your router and connected devices before choosing one.
What is not established about heaters and Wi-Fi
The available sources do not establish that ordinary electric, infrared, oil-filled, or hydronic heaters generally disrupt Wi-Fi, nor do they provide a controlled comparison ranking heater types by interference risk. There is also no supported percentage for how often heaters cause Wi-Fi problems. Treat the exact location and equipment in your home as the variables to test rather than assuming the heater is the cause.
