Moving bikes from a roof rack to a rear or hitch-mounted carrier can improve fuel economy in some circumstances, but there is no established MPG gain that applies to every car. In a Consumer Reports comparison at 65 mph, a hitch rack performed better than a roof rack on a 2019 Nissan Altima and a 2019 Toyota RAV4. The result is useful direction, not a guarantee for other vehicles, speeds or rack setups.
What Consumer Reports’ comparison found
Consumer Reports compared the two vehicles at 65 mph with no rack, an empty rack and a rack carrying two adult-sized bicycles. It reported that a loaded rack affected the sedan more than the SUV, and that even an empty roof rack imposed a large penalty on the sedan. Its summary said, “Only the empty hitch rack had a negligible impact.” That observation applies to the test’s empty hitch rack, not every hitch rack or car.

The comparison supports a practical possibility: moving bikes off the roof may reduce the aerodynamic penalty on some vehicles. It does not establish a typical MPG improvement, and the precise percentage values should not be generalized beyond the named vehicles and test conditions.
Why rack position can affect fuel economy
A rack and the bicycles it carries can change a vehicle’s aerodynamic drag. The effect depends on how the rack and bikes meet the airflow, as well as the vehicle’s shape and driving conditions. Added cargo also increases weight. Science Buddies explains that air resistance grows as a car moves faster; as a result, the same rack setup may have a different effect at different speeds.
#1 Best Overall
- Secure Bike Transportation: Safely transport up to 4 bikes with ease. The rack's towing capacity is 150 lbs and includes a hitch pin for secure attachment. An added reflector enhances safety during travel
- Convenient Swing-Down Feature: The swing-down feature provides effortless access to the rear of your vehicle, ensuring convenience when needed. Ideal for vans, SUVs, pickup trucks, and sedans with receiver hitches
- Easy Installation: Installing the MaxxHaul Towing Products 70210 Deluxe 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack is a breeze and takes just minutes. The support arms, equipped with adjustable hold-down straps, firmly secure and transport your bikes
- Broad Hitch Compatibility: This rack fits 2" x 2" hitch receivers, offering versatile compatibility with a variety of vehicles
- Durable Construction: Built from rigid all-steel construction and powder-coated for durability, this rack is designed for longevity. The adjustable bike cradle with hook and loop straps ensures secure transportation
Observed fuel economy can also vary with wind, route and driving pattern. The available comparisons do not isolate all these factors, so there is no sound basis for promising a fixed MPG increase from switching rack positions.
Compare the options for your car and riding habits
| Mount position | Practical considerations |
|---|---|
| Roof | Leaves cabin and rear-view space available, but bikes must be lifted higher and roof clearance becomes a concern. Confirm the vehicle’s roof-load limit and rack compatibility. |
| Trunk or rear | Can avoid lifting bikes onto the roof, but fit and access to the rear may vary by car and carrier. Check the carrier maker’s vehicle-fit guidance. |
| Hitch | Often easier to load than a roof carrier, according to TOUR’s 2012 comparison. Consider whether the car has a compatible towbar and whether the carrier affects access to the rear. |
Cyclingnews identifies roof, trunk and hitch/rear carriers as common options. TOUR’s comparison covered ten hitch racks and five roof racks, and noted that loading a roof rack was harder while towbar loading was easier. These practical observations do not establish a universal fuel-economy ranking across cars.

- Features. Hitch insert fits 2-in receiver hitches. Patented tie-down cradle system individually secures and protects bicycles.
- Carry arms fold out of the way when not in use. Rack tilts back for easy lift-gate access. No-wobble bolt eliminates movement of rack inside of hitch.
- All retainer clips attached with lanyards to prevent lost parts. Minor assembly required. Black powder-coated finish.
Account for empty racks, bike loads and e-bikes
An unused rack still changes the vehicle’s profile, so removing it when practical can be worth considering. Consumer Reports distinguished empty racks from racks carrying two bikes, and noted that hitch racks are easier to remove. Its observation about an empty hitch rack should not be treated as a general finding about all rack designs.

For e-bikes and other heavy bicycles, check the carrier’s total capacity and the limit for each individual rail. Allianz Center for Technology’s July 2018 test summary also emphasizes observing the vehicle’s roof-load limit when using a roof rack. It recommends rear transport of pedelecs based on its tests and advises checking fastenings during travel pauses. Follow the current instructions from the vehicle and rack manufacturers.

How to check the effect on your own vehicle
- Choose a safe, repeatable route. Keep the route, speed, tire condition and driving style as consistent as practical, and avoid comparing trips with substantially different wind or traffic.
- Record a no-rack baseline. Use the vehicle’s fuel-economy display or calculate consumption consistently over the same route. Repeat the trip rather than relying on a single reading.
- Test each setup separately. Compare no rack, an empty rack and the rack carrying your usual bikes. If you are choosing between roof and hitch mounting, keep the bike load the same for each comparison.
- Compare averages, not isolated trips. Small changes in traffic, weather or driving can mask a rack’s effect. Treat the result as a practical estimate for your vehicle and use, not a controlled universal figure.
Science Buddies outlines this kind of with-and-without-rack comparison and recommends distinguishing empty-rack and loaded-rack conditions. Do not attempt a test that compromises safe bike mounting or normal driving.

TOUR’s 2012 practical comparison considered multiple hitch and roof carriers and remarked that fuel consumption depends on vehicle type. Its approximately 15% statement is a broad historical report, not a controlled result that can be applied to an individual car. Neither that figure nor the Consumer Reports comparison supplies a reliable universal estimate for how much fuel a particular driver will save.

- Hitch-mounted bike rack securely holds up to 4 bicycles; fits most cars, SUVs, and trucks; 2-inch hitch
- Ideal for transporting bikes for cycling trips, group rides, family trips, camping trips, cycling races, and more
- Durable powder-coated steel frame with reinforced car bike rack tie-downs; 132-pound weight capacity
- Anti-rattle 4-bike car rack reduces wobbling and noise during transport
- Foldable bike rack for space-saving storage; easy installation and removal
For a decision, weigh more than MPG: vehicle fit, loading effort, access to the rear, roof clearance, how often the carrier stays installed and the bike-weight limits all matter. A hitch carrier may be a sensible alternative to a roof rack, but the fuel-economy benefit for your car is something to measure rather than assume.
