Sometimes—but a completed cryptocurrency transfer usually cannot be reversed. A public blockchain may let investigators trace where funds moved, but tracing alone does not identify a thief or return the money. Recovery may be possible if funds reach an exchange or another point where assets can be frozen or seized, but it depends on the evidence, timing, platform and jurisdiction. Report the theft promptly, preserve the transaction details and be wary of anyone promising a guaranteed recovery.
Can a crypto transaction be reversed?
Generally, no. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) describes cryptocurrency transactions as irrevocable: a third party does not authorize them, so there is no bank-style chargeback process for a completed on-chain transfer. Contacting a wallet provider or exchange may help with a compromised account or a platform-controlled balance, but it does not by itself undo a transfer already confirmed on a blockchain. FBI guidance for cryptocurrency scam victims explains what information to report.

Can stolen cryptocurrency be traced—and does that mean it can be recovered?
Many blockchains record transactions on public ledgers, which investigators can use to follow funds between addresses. That trail is useful evidence, but it is not the same as identifying the person behind an address or recovering the assets. Funds may move through multiple addresses or reach overseas exchanges and jurisdictions where investigation or legal action is difficult. The FBI discusses both tracing and these limits in its victim guidance.
Recovery requires more than locating funds: an actor with authority must be able to restrict access or take control of them, and a legal or platform process must apply. An exchange may freeze an account under its internal procedures or in response to legal process. Law enforcement may pursue seizure and forfeiture, and formal mechanisms can allow forfeited assets to be returned to victims. None of these routes guarantees that funds will be found, remain available or be returned to a particular victim. The FBI’s warning about cryptocurrency recovery companies makes clear that private firms cannot issue seizure orders.

What to do after cryptocurrency is stolen
- Stop sending money. If the theft involves a fake investment platform or a person still contacting you, do not send more funds. Avoid alerting suspected criminals about a law-enforcement report if doing so could compromise an investigation. The FBI’s cryptocurrency scam guidance advises victims to stop sending money.
- Secure accounts and devices you still control. If an exchange, email account or wallet credential may be compromised, contact the provider through its official website or app and protect any assets that remain accessible. Do not share a seed phrase, private key or one-time passcode with anyone claiming to help.
- Report promptly. In the United States, submit a report to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center or contact a local FBI field office. The FBI says to report even if transaction information is incomplete. Reporting does not guarantee an investigation or individual follow-up; IC3 referrals are discretionary.
- Contact any relevant exchange through its official channel. If funds were sent from an exchange account or appear to have reached one, provide transaction identifiers and any IC3 or law-enforcement report reference. An exchange may be able to act under its own procedures or legal process, but customer support cannot simply reverse a confirmed blockchain transfer.
- Preserve the evidence. Keep transaction hashes, wallet addresses, asset types and amounts, dates and times with time zones, exchange and account records, emails, chats, phone numbers, website and app names, and a timeline of events. Save messages from anyone offering recovery help, too. The FBI’s reporting guidance lists transaction and contact details to include.
- If you are outside the United States, report locally. Contact your local police or national cybercrime authority and use the platform’s official support channel. IC3 is a U.S. reporting route; the appropriate authority varies by country.
Which recovery routes can actually help?
| Route | What it can do | Authority and limits |
|---|---|---|
| IC3 or local law-enforcement report | Creates a report and may help investigators assess and follow the transaction trail. | A report does not itself freeze funds or guarantee an investigation, follow-up or recovery. In the U.S., IC3 referrals are discretionary. |
| Exchange support | May review activity and, where funds are in an account it controls, potentially restrict access under platform procedures. | Authority depends on the platform and circumstances. It cannot reverse an on-chain transfer simply because a victim requests it. |
| Law-enforcement seizure and forfeiture | Can potentially take control of assets through formal processes; forfeiture mechanisms may provide for victim compensation. | Authorities and courts—not private recovery companies—have the relevant legal powers. The process does not guarantee a victim will receive assets. |
| Civil litigation | May be a legal route in some cases, depending on the facts and parties that can be identified. | Jurisdiction, cost and prospects vary. Consider advice from a qualified lawyer; litigation is not a guaranteed recovery service. |
| Private tracing or recovery firm | May claim to analyze transaction activity or prepare a tracing report. | A tracing report is not a seizure order. The FBI says private-sector recovery companies cannot compel an exchange or law enforcement to freeze or return funds. |
How to spot a recovery scam
People who have already lost money are often targeted again by firms or impostors claiming they can get it back. The FBI warns that some recovery companies charge upfront, disappear or provide incomplete or inaccurate tracing reports before demanding more money. Others pose as lawyers or claim a government agency referred or authorized the case.
In a June 24, 2024 alert, the FBI said victims further exploited by fictitious law firms reported more than $9.9 million in losses from February 2023 through February 2024. The alert describes requests for personal or banking information, advance payments and supposed taxes or fees. Read the FBI/IC3 alert on fictitious law firms.

A prompt, detailed report can give investigators and platforms information they may need to assess the incident and follow transactions. The FBI specifically asks victims to submit a report even if transaction information is missing, providing as much detail as possible. Reporting is worthwhile, but it is not a promise that investigators will contact you or that funds will be recovered.

For context, IC3 reported more than $2.5 billion in cryptocurrency investment-fraud losses in 2022. That figure covers reported investment fraud, not every kind of crypto theft, and it says nothing about an individual victim’s chance of recovery. IC3’s 2023 recovery-company alert includes the figure.
