SpiralWave says its pulsed-microwave plasma prototypes can combine carbon dioxide captured from air with water to make methanol. The idea is a real prototype effort, but the performance, emissions savings and scale figures reported in 2024 are company claims—not independently verified results. Methanol made this way is a fuel, not permanent carbon storage: burning it releases its carbon dioxide again.
What is SpiralWave’s device?
SpiralWave is the startup behind two translucent plasma prototypes described in a November 2, 2024, report by Futurism: a smaller Nanobeam and a Microbeam more than six feet tall. The device was highlighted at TechCrunch Disrupt 2024. These are industrial prototypes, not documented consumer appliances.

The stated goal is to take carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, use water as another input, and produce methanol. Methanol is a liquid fuel and a chemical feedstock. In principle, making it from captured CO₂ can recycle carbon that would otherwise be released from fossil sources, but whether the complete process reduces emissions depends on how it is powered and operated.
How does the plasma process reportedly work?
SpiralWave CEO and cofounder Abed Bukhari described the device as generating rapid plasma pulses with three microwave frequencies. As quoted in Futurism’s 2024 report, he said: “You can see the plasma here in very quick pulses. With every pulse, it breaks down CO2.”

The report attributes this sequence to Bukhari: one pulse breaks CO₂ into carbon monoxide (CO), another breaks water (H₂O) into hydrogen (H) and hydroxyl (OH), and a third brings the components together to form methanol. This is the founder’s description of the process; the report does not cite an independently reviewed process paper establishing the mechanism or its performance.
The broad engineering challenge is that carbon dioxide is chemically stable, while making methanol requires energy and hydrogen. A plasma process aims to supply that energy through electrical pulses. The reported account does not provide enough technical detail to assess reactor conditions, product separation, or how the system handles all reaction byproducts.

What performance and energy figures has SpiralWave reported?
Futurism’s November 2024 article attributed the following figures to SpiralWave or Bukhari. They should be read as reported claims, not independently measured or verified results.
| Reported figure | What it refers to | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| About 75% of input electrical energy converted to methanol | Operation targeting CO₂ | Claim attributed to SpiralWave/Bukhari by Futurism; the report does not give an independent test protocol or system boundary. |
| About 90% conversion | Operation using flue gas | Claim attributed to SpiralWave/Bukhari by Futurism; the report does not define the conversion metric in enough detail to equate it with a verified methanol yield. |
| About 10,000 kWh per metric ton of methanol | Methanol made from ambient-air CO₂ | Figure reported by SpiralWave through Futurism; the report does not establish independent measurement or whether all supporting energy demands are included. |
| About 7,000 kWh per metric ton of methanol | Methanol made using higher-concentration CO₂ | Figure reported by SpiralWave through Futurism; the report does not establish independent measurement or whether all supporting energy demands are included. |
The reported electricity demand is lower for the higher-concentration CO₂ case than for ambient-air capture. That difference is plausible as an engineering distinction: extracting CO₂ from dilute air requires separating it from a much larger volume of gas than processing a concentrated stream. But the figures alone are not enough to compare the full cost or climate impact of the two routes.

Would the fuel actually reduce emissions?
SpiralWave proponents were reported by Futurism as claiming 95% fewer carbon emissions. The article does not supply an independent lifecycle assessment or define the system boundary behind that percentage, so it cannot establish how much lower emissions would be in a particular deployment.
The result depends especially on the electricity source. If the device uses high-carbon electricity, the emissions associated with powering it could erode or outweigh the benefit of using captured CO₂. A full comparison would also need to account for capture, water processing, equipment manufacture, methanol synthesis, transport, and the fuel or chemical that the methanol replaces.

There is also a distinction between carbon recycling and carbon removal. If methanol is burned, its carbon is released as CO₂. The process may potentially reduce net emissions compared with making and using methanol from fossil carbon, but it does not permanently remove carbon from the atmosphere unless the carbon is stored rather than returned through use. A claim of lower emissions is therefore not the same as a claim of durable carbon removal.

Ambient air contains CO₂ at low concentration, while flue gas from an industrial source can contain a higher concentration. A capture-and-conversion system has to process more gas to obtain the same amount of CO₂ when the intake is dilute. SpiralWave’s reported energy figures reflect this distinction: its stated requirement is about 10,000 kWh per metric ton of methanol for ambient-air CO₂ versus about 7,000 kWh for higher-concentration CO₂.

Using flue gas also changes what “removal” means. Capturing CO₂ before it escapes a smokestack may avoid some emissions, but it is not atmospheric removal in the same sense as extracting CO₂ already dispersed in the air. The climate outcome depends on the source, the energy supply, the methanol’s eventual use, and what process or fuel it displaces.
Is the Nanobeam or Microbeam available to buy?
No retail model or compatible consumer accessory is identified in Futurism’s 2024 report. The Nanobeam and Microbeam are presented as prototypes, not products for household purchase. The report also does not establish commercial availability, operating costs, durability, safety certification, or a reseller program.
What does the one-gigaton goal mean?
SpiralWave’s stated future ambition, as reported in 2024, was a system more than 300 feet tall with a target of extracting about one gigaton of CO₂ per year. That is a scale-up goal, not demonstrated capacity. The reported prototype descriptions do not show that this size or annual extraction rate has been built, tested, or achieved.
What remains unproven?
The central question is not whether plasma can be produced or methanol can be synthesized, but whether this particular system can do so efficiently, reliably, and with a net climate benefit at useful scale. The 2024 report does not establish:
