What Siri can access on your device
Siri can use information in Messages, Mail, and Contacts when it is relevant to a request or feature. That may include finding information, helping with a task, or making suggestions. Siri can also use details in your Contacts app’s My Card, such as your name, addresses, and relationships. Apple describes these capabilities in its Siri settings guide.

“Read my messages” is therefore not the same question as “Does Siri have access to my data?” Siri may use the content available on your device to carry out a request. Whether information is sent beyond the device is a separate question, and the answer varies with the request and processing route.

Does Apple receive your messages, emails, or contacts?
Not automatically just because Siri is enabled. Apple says some requests are processed on device, while others are sent to Apple servers. For some complex Apple Intelligence requests, processing may use Private Cloud Compute. Apple’s Siri, Dictation & Privacy disclosure and Apple Intelligence privacy notice describe these routes; the route depends on the request, feature, settings, and device.

These descriptions are Apple’s statements about its systems, not an independent audit. They should not be read as a guarantee that all Siri requests are processed locally or that no request context reaches Apple.
What Siri request information Apple says it retains
Apple distinguishes audio from transcripts and related request history. According to its current Siri, Dictation & Privacy disclosure, Siri audio is not stored by Apple by default unless you opt in to Improve Siri and Dictation. Apple may retain transcripts and related request data for up to two years, associated with a rotating random identifier generated by the device rather than your Apple Account or email address. A small subset selected for review may be kept longer.

The rotating identifier is not the same as no retention: Apple’s disclosure says request transcripts and related data may be retained, even when they are not linked to your Apple Account.
What changes if you enable Improve Siri and Apple Intelligence
If enabled, Improve Siri and Apple Intelligence allows Apple to collect and use text and audio interactions with Siri, Dictation, and Translate to improve its products and foundation models. Apple says this data is not associated with your Apple Account, personal details are removed where possible, and reviewed audio is accessed only by employees subject to confidentiality obligations. How Siri works with contacts and third-party apps
Siri can use My Card to understand information such as your name, home or work address, and relationships. When Siri communicates with a third-party app extension, Apple Platform Security says Siri checks that app’s user-controlled permissions before providing protected data. For example, if an app does not have Contacts access, Siri does not resolve a relationship such as “my mother” for that app. If access is allowed, Siri may provide information relevant to the specific request—not the full address book merely because Siri is enabled. When Siri interacts with a third-party app, that app’s own terms and privacy policy also apply. Check both its Contacts permission and any Siri integration settings if you do not want it to use contact information.

How to limit Siri data use
- Review Siri controls. Open the Siri settings on your device and check which features are enabled, including controls related to reading messages. Apple’s menu labels and available controls vary by device and software version; use the current Apple Support guide for your installed version.
- Review app access. Check app permissions for Contacts and any Siri integrations you use. Remove access from apps that do not need it.
- Review improvement settings. Apple directs users to Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements to review Improve Siri and Apple Intelligence options. The exact labels and availability may differ by software version and region; consult Apple’s privacy disclosure.
Apple summarizes its approach this way: “Siri is designed to protect your information and enable you to choose what you share.” That is Apple’s statement in its Siri, Dictation & Privacy disclosure.
