Sometimes—but sideloading does not enroll an app in a universal Android update service. An app installed from an APK can update automatically only when a distributor (such as Google Play, the original publisher, or another app store) both supplies a newer build and is allowed to install it. Android then checks that the update belongs to the same app, is signed compatibly, and has a version code at least as high as the installed one.
If those conditions are met, an update can normally be installed over the existing app without uninstalling it. If the replacement uses a different application ID or an incompatible signing key, Android treats it as a different app; switching usually requires an uninstall, which removes that app’s data.

What “automatic update” means on Android
People use “automatic” for three different stages:
- Checking: a store or updater periodically looks for a newer release.
- Downloading: the newer package is retrieved in the background.
- Installing: the package is applied, either silently or after the user approves it.
Android’s platform rules do not make every sideloaded APK participate in all three stages. The source that distributed the app must provide update discovery and delivery. Google’s documentation describes Google Play’s rules and Android’s package checks, but it does not promise identical behavior for every device maker’s store or every third-party marketplace. Read the platform overview in Android Developers’ “How app updates work” and the distribution guidance in “Alternative distribution options”.

Android’s compatibility checks
Before Android accepts an update, it compares the installed package with the incoming one. A distributor may find a newer file, but the installation still fails if these identity checks do not pass.
Same application ID
The update must use the same application ID (the package identity used by Android). A build with a different ID is a separate application, even if it has the same name, icons, and features. Android will not replace the installed app in place.
Compatible signing certificate
The update must be signed by the same signing identity as the installed app, unless the publisher has used a valid proof of signing-key rotation. The signature is Android’s assurance that the publisher is allowed to replace the existing package. A visually identical APK signed by another party is not an in-place update.

Equal or higher version code
The incoming package needs a version code at least as high as the installed package’s code. A file can have a newer marketing version name but still be rejected if its internal version code is lower. This rule prevents an update source from silently downgrading the app.

Permission and user approval
The source must be permitted to install the package, and some update situations require the user to accept the installation. Consequently, “automatic” does not guarantee a completely hands-off experience on every Android release, device configuration, store setting, or distributor.
Will Google Play update an app installed with an APK?
It can, but only when Play’s eligibility conditions line up. Google Play may update an app first installed from another source when all of the following are true:
- The app is published on Google Play under the same application ID.
- The Play-distributed package has a matching signing identity (or a valid key-rotation relationship).
- The app is in the user’s Play library or was preloaded by the device manufacturer.
- The listing and package are available to that user and device.
- The installed copy is older according to its version code.
When those conditions hold, Play is an eligible source even though the original installation came from an APK file. The update is applied over the existing installation, so the app’s data is retained. If the app is not published on Play, is unavailable in the user’s region or device configuration, or uses a different signing identity, Play has no compatible package to install.
Why Play might not appear to update it
A Play listing alone is not enough. Verify the application ID and signing identity, not just the app’s name. Also check that the Play account has the app in its library, the device is eligible, and the Play version has a higher version code. If any one of those tests fails, Play can leave the sideloaded copy untouched without indicating that the APK came from outside Play.

Can another store or the publisher’s updater do it?
The original distributor
A publisher that distributes APKs directly can implement its own update check and installer. Whether it checks in the background, downloads automatically, or asks for confirmation is a policy of that updater. Sideloading by itself does not create this service; the publisher must build and operate it.
Third-party app stores
Another store can update the app when it distributes a compatible package and has permission to install it. The same five questions apply: does the store offer the app and check for updates, does its package use the same application ID, is the signing identity compatible, is its version code newer, and are the source and device eligible? Official Android guidance does not establish one automatic-update policy for every outside marketplace, so behavior has to be verified for the particular store and app.
Two stores can both be eligible
Android does not inherently prevent different installers from updating one another’s packages when the application ID and signing certificate match and the new version code is equal or higher. Android Developers states: “There is no built-in prevention against different installers updating an app when the updates have the same signing certificate and the same or higher version code.”

The active source can therefore be unclear: one store may install an update while the other still shows an older release, or both may offer notifications. If predictable maintenance matters, keep only the distributor you intend to use responsible for updates and avoid installing parallel store clients that target the same package.

When an in-place update is impossible
Different application IDs
Two packages with different IDs are unrelated to Android, even if they are alternative editions of the same product. Installing the second package creates a separate app. It cannot inherit the first app’s data through a normal update.
Different signing keys
If the IDs match but the signing keys are incompatible, Android rejects the replacement as an unauthorized update. This commonly happens when a publisher changes distribution channels without preserving its signing identity, or when an unofficial build was signed by someone else.
The practical consequence
Switching between incompatible packages generally requires uninstalling the installed app and then installing the other one. Uninstalling deletes that app’s local data, so export or back up anything the app supports before making the switch. A backup cannot make Android accept an incompatible package; it only helps you restore data after a clean installation.

On Android 8.0 and later, installation permission is granted to a particular source, such as a browser or file manager. The setting authorizes that source to start an installation; it does not search for updates, subscribe the app to a store, or make future APKs arrive automatically. Android’s alternative-distribution documentation explains this source-specific permission model: Alternative distribution options.

Turning on the permission can therefore be necessary for a manual update, but it is never sufficient by itself. The source still needs to discover a newer build, download it, and present a package that passes Android’s identity, signature, and version checks. You can turn the permission off again after installing if the source no longer needs it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Play Integrity is a separate issue
Play Integrity’s account and licensing verdicts describe how Google evaluates an app installation and account context; they are not the same thing as Android’s mechanical ability to install a compatible update. Google documents sideloading as one situation that can produce an “unlicensed” verdict in some integrity checks. That verdict alone does not prove that a compatible package update is technically impossible. Developers may nevertheless choose to restrict features or distribution based on their integrity policy. Terminology and verdict details are documented in Play Integrity API setup.
Compare the possible update sources
| Update source | Can it discover updates? | What must match | Typical result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Play | Yes, when Play carries the app and can evaluate it | Same application ID, compatible signing identity, newer version code, library or preload status, and user/device availability | May update a sideloaded copy in place |
| Publisher’s own updater | Only if the publisher implemented one | Its package must pass Android’s identity, signature, and version checks; the source must have installation permission | Could check, download, and install automatically or request approval |
| Another app store | Depends on that store’s catalog and updater | Same application ID, compatible signing identity, newer version code, and source/device eligibility | Can update across stores; the active source may be unpredictable |
| One-off APK downloaded manually | No universal Android service is created | A later APK still needs compatible identity, signature, and version code | Requires a new manual installation unless a separate updater is used |
How to work out why your sideloaded app is not updating
- Identify the source you expect to update it. Decide whether that is Play, the publisher, or a particular marketplace. If no source offers update checks, there is nothing to run automatically.
- Confirm the application ID. Compare the package identity of the installed APK with the identity of the candidate listing or download. Matching names are not sufficient.
- Confirm signing compatibility. A package signed with a different key will not replace the installed copy, unless the publisher supplied a valid key-rotation proof.
- Compare version codes. The candidate must have an equal or higher version code. A lower code is treated as a downgrade and rejected.
- Check source and device eligibility. For Play, confirm the app is in the account’s library or was preloaded, is available to the account and device, and is actually newer.
- Review installation permission. For an outside source on Android 8.0 or later, the specific browser, file manager, or store used to install must be allowed to install unknown apps.
- Look for an intentional channel switch. If the alternate package has a different ID or signing key, an in-place update is not possible. Preserve the data you need before uninstalling and reinstalling.
Common situations and their outcomes
You downloaded a Play-listed APK from the publisher’s website
Play can potentially take over updates if the website build and Play build share the application ID and signing identity, the Play account and device are eligible, and Play’s version code is newer. If the website build uses a separate key, Play cannot replace it.
You installed an app from a store that also appears in Play
Both stores may be technically capable of installing later versions when their packages are signed compatibly. Whichever source checks and offers a newer version may perform the update. Keep an eye on version numbers and notifications if you want one source to remain authoritative.
You received an APK from a developer’s release page
Nothing in Android automatically monitors that page. You need the developer’s updater, a compatible store listing, or a manual process. Granting unknown-app permission only enables the installation step.
You installed a modified or independently signed build
Even if the original app is available on Play, the modified build may carry a different signing key. Play then cannot update it in place. Reinstalling the official build is the usual route, with the associated risk of losing local data.
Bottom line for a sideloaded app
A sideloaded Android app can update automatically, but only through a distributor that supplies a compatible newer package and is authorized to install it. Check the source, application ID, signing identity, version code, and eligibility together. “Install unknown apps” enables installation from a source; it does not provide update discovery. When identity or signing differs, Android requires a separate installation rather than an automatic in-place update.
