What Shortcut does in Excel
Shortcut describes itself as an AI agent for spreadsheet work. Its Excel add-in opens in a panel inside Microsoft Excel and works interactively on the workbook in front of you. You can use plain-language requests for tasks involving formulas, formatting, charts, and analysis, review changes, then continue saving and sharing the workbook through Excel. “In Excel” does not describe every way to use Shortcut. The company also offers a CLI and desktop app, a browser-based web app, and a Platform API. Those forms run in different environments and do not all have access to the same files or tools. The product overview describes the available forms and their intended workflows.

Yes. The Excel add-in is intended to work on the open workbook through Microsoft’s Office add-in interface. This gives it structured access to that workbook, rather than unrestricted control of your computer.

What Shortcut’s performance figures do—and do not—show
Shortcut publishes positive performance and customer-outcome figures, but the available evidence is vendor-reported rather than independent validation.

- Benchmark: In July 2026, Shortcut reported 76% for Shortcut, 66% for Claude for Excel, and 59% for Microsoft Copilot across 20 real-world tasks in finance, private equity, and hedge funds, with three runs per task. These are results from Shortcut’s own evaluation; they do not establish that Shortcut is generally the most accurate tool.
- Task cost: For those same completed tasks, Shortcut reported average token expenditure of $5.09 for Shortcut and $8.17 for Claude for Excel. This is an internal evaluation measure, not a general price comparison or prediction of what an individual account will spend.
- Customer outcomes: Shortcut’s homepage reports 25–35% efficiency gains in modeling review during a 45-day TresVista pilot, with some workflows 5x faster. It also reports that investment banking teams built a full LBO model with 400+ linked formulas in 45 minutes, compared with about five hours by hand. The underlying studies are not provided in the reviewed materials, so treat these as vendor-reported examples, not controlled independent results.
These figures are published on Shortcut’s homepage and should be weighed as vendor claims rather than proof of outcomes for a different team, workbook, or task.

How to decide whether Shortcut is right for you
- Choose the Excel add-in if you want to ask for changes and review them in the workbook already open in Excel, and your work does not require VBA or broad computer access.
- Consider the CLI or desktop app if the task needs local files, synced folders, local tools, or desktop Excel automation. The documented full desktop Excel automation support is for Windows; check the current requirements before installing.
- Consider the web app if you want to work in a browser and can provide the files there without relying on desktop or synced-folder access.
- Consider the API if you need a server-side process that handles submitted files without a person interacting in a live Excel session.
Before choosing, check where the workbook is stored, whether macros or desktop-only features are essential, whether you need interactive review, and which files or integrations the agent must reach.
