No. Free disk space on a Configuration Manager client cannot be converted into a Virtual SAN. The client uses space on its own local drive for its content cache and for application requirement checks. A Virtual SAN is a separate storage layer that pools disks for virtual machines. The title combines two unrelated uses of “disk space” and “SAN,” which is why it reads as if one becomes the other.
Why the title does not describe a real conversion
Microsoft’s Configuration Manager documentation (ConfigMgr, formerly SCCM) describes free disk space on managed Windows devices only in terms of client requirements and cache management. It does not describe any process that takes that space and presents it to a storage fabric, a failover cluster, or a hypervisor. No conversion mechanism from client cache to Virtual SAN is documented. If a guide promises one, it is describing a different product or a misnamed workflow, and you should verify its claims against the vendor’s own documentation.

What Configuration Manager uses client free space for
Configuration Manager uses free space on each endpoint in three distinct ways. Each one is local to that device.

- Microsoft’s current Configuration Manager hardware guidance lists 500 MB of available disk space for a Windows client.
- The same guidance recommends 5 GB for the client cache.
- Customized client installation settings can reduce the space required.
These figures come from Microsoft’s current hardware documentation. Confirm them against the page that matches the Configuration Manager version your site runs before sizing hardware.
#1 Best Overall
- Direct-attached storage device via USB Type-C for Windows, macOS and Linux
- Use the TR-004 as external storage for NAS backup
- Expand the capacity of your QNAP NAS
- 4 x 3.5-inch SATA 3Gb/s (Diskless)
- Hardware RAID supports RAID 0, 1, 5, JBOD, and individual disks
Sizing the cache with client installation properties
Client installation properties can size the cache as a percentage of free disk space. They can also choose the drive with the most free space. The drive-selection option interacts with any cache path you set explicitly, so test the combination on one device before rolling it out to a collection.
Free-space requirement rules in application deployments
An application deployment type can include a requirement rule that checks free space in MB. The rule can target any drive, the system drive, or a specified drive. It compares the value using equality, greater-than, less-than, or a range. Microsoft’s PowerShell reference includes an example that checks the free space of a selected partition. This rule decides whether an application is eligible to install on a device. It does not pool, move, or reassign space.

- High Speed Data Transmission: The D2-320 hard drive enclosure (a DAS, NOT a NAS) adopts USB 3.2 Gen2 protocol for high-speed data transmission up to 10Gbps. With 2 hard drives in RAID 0, the read/write speed can reach up to 521MB/s (SATA III HDD 8TB x 2). With 2 SSD's in RAID 0, the read speed can reach 1075MB/s (SATA III 1TB SSD x 2)
- Multiple RAID Configurations: The D2-320 is a hardware RAID enclosure and it supports RAID 0, RAID 1, JBOD and SINGLE which can better satisfy various demands of users. In RAID 1, data will be in a mirror backup. When there is a damaged hard drive, you can directly replace the hard drive, and the data will be recovered automatically. This provides an absolute security for the data
- Super-Large Storage Capacity: The D2-320 USB storage enclosure can support up to two 3.5" and 2.5" SATA HDD, as well as 2.5" SATA SSD, with a maximum capacity of 22TB per drive, providing users with up to 44TB (22TB x 2) of storage space
- Intelligent Temperature Control: The D2-320 HDD enclosure has an intelligent temperature-controlled and low-noise fan that automatically adjusts its speed based on the temperature of the hard disk. This feature ensures that the hard disk operates at its best temperature and provides better heat dissipation
- Tool-Free Hard Drive Installation: The D2-320 external hard drive enclosure features a tool-free hard drive tray design that allows for easy installation and removal of hard drives without the need for any tools. Furthermore, the D2-320 incorporates a brand new Push-lock unique design from TerraMaster, which automatically locks the hard drive tray when you insert the hard drive, preventing the hard drive from falling out or disconnecting
System Center VMM SAN copy and Virtual SAN are different things
VMM SAN copy
In System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM), SAN copy is a method for provisioning virtual machines rapidly. Microsoft’s procedure requires a virtual hard disk that is SAN-copy capable and a SAN transfer type. It operates on storage that the VMM environment already manages. It does not turn a client’s local disk into shared storage.

Third-party Virtual SAN products
A Virtual SAN is software that presents local disks across servers as shared storage for virtual machines. StarWind’s guide covers deploying its Virtual SAN as a controller virtual machine on Windows Server with Hyper-V. It includes steps for iSCSI and cluster storage. Those steps are specific to that product and version, so follow the vendor’s guide for your release rather than generic instructions.

Finding clients that are low on space
Community posts describe reports that list devices by available hard-drive space, and queries that combine online status, inactivity, and low disk space. These depend on hardware inventory data. Older queries were written against earlier database schemas. Before you reuse one, check the current hardware inventory configuration and the reporting schema for your release, and confirm that inventory actually collects the free-space values the query expects.

Choosing the right fix
- If a managed endpoint is short on space for its cache or fails a deployment requirement, the fix is local. Adjust the cache size or path, or review the requirement threshold.
- If virtual machines need shared storage across Hyper-V hosts, evaluate an existing SAN or a Virtual SAN product. Plan those disks as server storage, not as client cache.
- If you run System Center VMM and want faster provisioning, confirm that your storage supports SAN copy and that your virtual disks are SAN-copy capable.
Troubleshooting a client that is low on space
- The application fails its requirement rule. Compare the rule’s drive scope (any drive, system drive, or a specified drive) with the drive the application actually installs to. A system-drive check does not measure another volume.
- The cache uses too much space. Lower the cache size through the client installation properties, then verify the result on a test device.
- The cache lands on the wrong drive. Check whether the most-free-space drive option is set, and whether an explicit cache path overrides it.
- The requirement passes but the install still fails. Check free space on the target volume at install time, not only at the time of the check.
