Most of CarPlay’s useful extras sit in three places: the Dashboard, Siri, and Messages. Apple also documents passenger control of music through SharePlay, options for app order and wallpaper, and a set of deeper areas such as Live Activities, widgets, and Home controls. Whether you can use any of these depends on your vehicle, your region, your iPhone’s software, and the apps involved. Each feature below notes its specific conditions.
Check what your car and iPhone support first
CarPlay is available only on select automobiles and aftermarket navigation systems, and it is not offered in every country or region. Before you troubleshoot a missing feature, confirm three things: your vehicle, your region, and your iOS version. Apple’s overview, Use CarPlay with your iPhone, is the reference for setup.
- Vehicle controls: Built-in controls vary. Apple names the touchscreen, rotary knob, and touchpad as examples, and points to your car manual for the procedure that matches your model.
- Turn on Siri: Several features below depend on Siri, so make sure it is enabled on the iPhone before you connect.
- iOS version: Feature availability can change between iOS releases. Check the Apple page for your version before assuming a feature is missing from your car.
Wired or wireless connection
The connection method determines what hardware you need.

Dashboard and Siri Suggestions
1. The Dashboard as a glanceable home screen
Apple states that the CarPlay Dashboard is a simpler view, and that with iOS 13 and later it “brings a simpler view of the road ahead.” The Dashboard groups Maps, audio controls, and Siri Suggestions in one place. That means you can check your route, see what is playing, and act on a suggestion without returning to the app grid for each task.

2. Siri Suggestions for your next task
Siri Suggestions appear on the Dashboard and can include Calendar events, such as a drive to your next meeting. Apple also gives an example of operating a garage door near home. That action works only if you have compatible HomeKit accessories set up.

3. Start Siri with the steering-wheel button
In a supported vehicle, hold the voice-command button on the steering wheel until Siri beeps, then speak your request. According to Apple’s Use Siri in your car on iPhone guide, you can also activate Siri with a CarPlay screen button. Where your vehicle supports it, “Hey Siri” works as well.
4. Ask Siri to share your ETA
Apple’s Siri guide uses “Share my ETA” as an example request. Treat this as a voice action that depends on the navigation app and the contacts involved, not a guarantee that every navigation app behaves the same way.
5. Report a traffic incident by voice
Apple says you can report incidents with Siri while driving. Reporting incident status is available only in select countries or regions, so if the option does not appear, check your location against Apple’s guide.

Messages without taking your eyes off the road
6. Have Siri announce incoming messages
Siri can read incoming messages aloud. Apple’s setup guidance lets you decide whether announcements begin at the start of a drive and which messages Siri reads. Set these choices before your first trip so you are not adjusting them mid-drive.
7. Reply to conversations
The Messages app in CarPlay can read unread conversations, let you reply to them, and start a new conversation. This keeps replies within the car’s interface rather than requiring you to pick up the phone.
8. React with a Tapback
To send a quick reaction, you can say “like that message” for a thumbs-up Tapback. You can also select a different emoji Tapback on the screen.
9. Keep important threads pinned
Conversations pinned in the Messages app on your iPhone appear in CarPlay Messages. Pin the threads you use most on the iPhone first, since that is the list CarPlay shows.

10. Send replies without a confirmation step
CarPlay’s Siri settings include an Automatically Send Messages option. When it is on, Siri skips the confirmation step unless you ask to change or cancel the message. This is a choice you have to make in settings; it applies only if you turn it on, and you should decide whether it suits how you drive.
Passenger music control with SharePlay
11. Let passengers choose the music
With SharePlay and CarPlay, the driver approves who joins, and passengers can join from a notification or by scanning a QR code. Everyone in the session needs to allow nearby contact discovery for music sessions. The requirements differ between the driver and passengers:

Make the CarPlay screen your own
12. Rearrange app icons
On your iPhone, the order of CarPlay apps is set from the car’s entry in Settings. Customize the layout this way:
- Open Settings on your iPhone and go to General, then CarPlay.
- Select your car.
- Choose the option to customize, and arrange the icons as you like.
Only apps that support CarPlay appear in this list. Changes take effect the next time the iPhone connects to the car.

13. Change the CarPlay wallpaper
The wallpaper is set from the CarPlay screen itself:
- Open Settings in CarPlay.
- Select Wallpaper.
- Choose a wallpaper and set it.

Apple’s iPhone User Guide lists several CarPlay topics beyond the Home screen. They include:

- Other apps
- Accessibility settings
